Clare 3-11 Meath 4-7 Clare were crowned All-Ireland minor B ladies football champions at Duggan park in Ballinasloe this afternoon in what was a thrilling contest where the lead changed hands on a number of occasions. A draw looked the likely outcome for much of the tie but the Clare defence excelled in the closing minutes as Meath came forward in waves in search of an equalising score. The Leinster side got off to a tremendous start with a goal from Caroline McLoughlin Quinn in the third minute which was followed by a Sarah Lynch point. Clare stormed into the game after this and had levelled the tie at 0-5 to 1-2 by the thirteenth minute with points from Fidelma Marrinan, Eimear Keane (2 each) and Ciara Hickey. There are three changes in personnell on the Clare team to play Tipperary in the All-Ireland senior hurling quarter final at Pairc Ui Caoimh on Saturday from that which lost to Cork in the Provincial final two weeks ago As expected, injury has ruled full back David McInerney out of the team while both Oisin O’Brien and Aron Shanagher have been omitted from the side which started against Cork. In fact Shanagher has failed to find a place in the match day twenty six. Crusheen’s Cian Dillon returns to the starting line up and he has been named at corner back with team captain Pat O’Connor taking over at full back in place of the injured McInerney. Seadna Morey reverts from wing to corner back in place of Oisin O’Brien and Jamie Shanahan is named at wing back. Getting the home venue was important was Colm Collins’ view when the draw for round three of the football qualifier pitched Clare against Mayo at Cusack Park. “All three teams in the draw with us are formidable opponents with Mayo, probably, the highest rated. Being involved at this stage of the qualifier means teams are playing good opposition. “They had a tough game with Derry on Saturday and they won’t be taking anything for granted. Mayo bring a tremendous following and, hopefully, Clare can match that,” the Clare boss added, confirming he will have to again plan without the injured Shane Brennan and Liam Markham. Mayo were put to the pin of their collar to get past Derry in Castlebar and indeed, for much of normal time, they played second fiddle to the Ulster side. Twenty years after making history when winning the All-Ireland minor hurling title for the first time in the county’s history, members of Clare’s victorious team from 1997 came together at Durty Nellies in Bunratty this Friday evening. They were joined by members of the management team including Kevin Kennedy (manager), Colm Honan and Louis Mulqueen to mention some. Team captain John Reddan returned from England for the re-union. It was a truly memorable occasion for Clare hurling followers as the county also won the senior All-Ireland title title in 1997. Ironically Clare haven’t won the All-Ireland minor title since then. The re-union took place at the end of a week in which the current county minor team qualified for the Provincial final which takes place on Sunday week when they will play either Cork or Tipperary who replay their semi-final on Monday evening. Clare 2-19 Waterford 3-9 A player of the match performance from Chloe Morey led Clare to a merited win over Waterford in round two of the Liberty Insurance All-Ireland senior camogie championship at sun drenched Cusack park this afternoon. While wearing the favourites tag, Clare did not get things all their own way in this tie and struggled to contain the visitors for much of the first half at  the end of which the visitors held a two point advantage, 2-5 to 0-9. Five minutes into the new half Clare had drawn level and a minute later went in front when Morey landed the first of six from play in that second period. At the three quarter stage Clare led on a scoreline of 0-15 to 2-7 and it was still anybody’s game. Clare 3-12 Dublin 0-9 Clare have moved to within one win of a first ever All-Ireland minor A camogie championship title after this merited semi-final victory over Dublin at sun splashed St. Brendan’s Park in Birr this Saturday afternoon. An all round better balanced and more skillful Clare side led from the outset and went to the break with an eight point advantage, 2-5 to 0-3. There was some concern at this stage as the would have to face what was a strong breeze in the second half but a blistering start to the new half which saw them extend their advantage by four points sent them on their way to the final where they will play either Cork or Galway who play their semi-final tomorrow, Sunday. Cuala 2-19 Ballyea 1-10 A magnificent season for Ballyea ended in disappointment at Croke Park this afternoon when they were outplayed by their Dublin counterparts,Cuala in the All-Ireland senior club hurling final. The Claremen can have few arguments with the outcome as Cuala dominated in all the key areas and were full value for their victory in a tie in which Ballyea’s key players failed to dominate as they had done in previous rounds. Credit must go to the new All-Ireland champions for the manner in which they nullified Ballyea’s star man Tony Kelly in particular and also in the way they didn’t allow Niall Deasy to have as big a influence as Ballyea fans had hoped for At the end of a low scoring first quarter the winners led by the odd point in three but then a slip up by the Clare side’s defence led to the opening for Colm Cr0nin to strike for the game’s first goal …
