Aldi to appeal Shannon decision

IN a statement this morning, Aldi has said it will appeal against Clare County Council’s decision to refuse its application for planning permission for a new store in Shannon. It expressed disappointment that it had not got the green light. “We are naturally disappointed with Clare County Council’s decision concerning our proposed new Shannon store.” “Our revised plans for the new store feature several facilities that will benefit the wider Shannon community, including a dedicated connection to the town centre for pedestrians and cyclists, the addition of a two storey café or restaurant unit with associated external terrace area and free-to-use electric vehicle charging points.” It vowed to appeal and said the development would be good for Shannon. “We are committed to bringing our fantastic prices, value and greater choice to shoppers in Shannon and will be appealing the decision to An Bord Pleanala.” “The environmentally friendly store will bring considerable investment to the town, creating 25 new permanent jobs, …

Aldi refused planning for Shannon store

ALDI have been refused planning permission for a new store in Shannon by Clare County Council planners. In a Chief Executive’s Order issued this week, the reasons given for the refusal included zoning, the lack of pedestrian linkages to the Town Centre, and it is claimed the development would contravene objectives in the Shannon Town and Environs Local Area Plan. The Order states, “The subject site is located on lands zoned as Mixed Use in the Shannon Town and Environs Local Area Plan and on lands identified to provide a future town centre area. It is considered that the proposed development would provide for an appropriate mix, range and type of uses consistent with the zoning objectives of the site.” It claimed the development “would seriously injure the amenities of the area”. In addition the Order states that the lack of “safe, convenient and attractive pedestrian linkages” to the Town Centre would materially contravene the current Shannon Town and Environs …

Aldi is confident of green light for Shannon

NEARLY 11 months after submitting an application for planning permission at Shannon, Aldi has provided a response to a further information request from Clare County Council. Despite Clare County Council denying planning permission to Aldi in 2017, (a decision which Aldi unsuccessfully appealed to An Bord Pleanála) the company is bullish about its prospects of getting approval now and a decision is due by May 10. The proposed development would be across the road from the existing town centre, on the northern side of the R471 (Airport Road). In the further information submission, it is claimed that Aldi looked at opening in the existing town centre, but that was not a runner. “The applicant engaged with the owners of the centre twice prior to lodgement of the application to review the potential for inclusion of an Aldi store withn the centre. “Unfortunately sufficient space was not available to accommodate a store with a retail floor area of 1,315 square metres, …

Shannon Councillor slams An Bord Pleanála after Aldi refusal

COUNCILLOR Gerry Flynn has criticised An Bord Pleanála after it rejected the advice of its own inspector, to turn down Aldi’s application for a store in Shannon. He said it is not the first time the body has done something like this regarding a Shannon proposal. “That has happened before, if you remember, it was the same with the crematorium. I don’t know why they have inspectors at all, the powers that be seem to see them as surplus to requirements at time. If an inspector comes out that has the knowledge and expertise to make a decision on a proposal, would you not think that this is the expert you have to listen to? “The board can say that even though you went out and did your job and gave us your recommendation, we have the power to overturn it and we can decide yay or nay. It’s a regular occurrence that an inspector’s report can be overturned or …

No Aldi for Shannon-An Bord Pleanála rejects its own inspector’s view

WHILE a Bord Pleanála inspector actually recommended that Clare County Council’s decision to refuse planning permission for an Aldi store in Shannon be overturned, his own board have rejected his conclusion and have denied planning. It seems to be the end of the road for the proposal for the Aldi store, something that many local people would consider to be a step in the right direction for the town and a step towards developing a conventional streetscape. In his report, Inspector Rónán O’Connor wrote, “I do not consider that the provision of the convenience retail store would diminish the range of services within Shannon Town Centre but rather would be complementary to same. This would, in turn, increase the attractiveness of Shannon Town Centre with a potential reduction in vacancy rates in the town.” He found that the development would increase competition within the town, which would also be in keeping with national retail policy. There is not another alternative …

Aldi gets approval for Killaloe store

PLANS for the development of a new Killaloe store, which could, it is claimed, generate a projected turnover of €9.12 million in 2019, has been approved by An Bord Pleanála, despite objections from local traders. Welcoming the decision, an Aldi spokesperson said the company believes competition is good for consumers. “Aldi will now move forward with our plans to open a new store in Killaloe, bringing our range of award-winning products at unbeatable prices to the local community. “The opening of every new Aldi store has brought greater choice, quality and value to more and more consumers across Ireland. Since 1999, we have invested €1.2 billion in our store opening programme and, last year, we spent over €700m with Irish suppliers,” the spokesperson continued. “Aldi are engaged in a three-year €100m expansion programme, with plans to open 20 new stores and creating 400 new jobs by the end of 2019.” This was the second time the German multinational submitted plans …

Council’s vision for Shannon challenged

THE county council has been asked to outline its vision for Shannon’s future, following the recent rejection of an application for planning permission by Aldi. There has been local anger at the rejection of the application, which people hoped would help revitalise the town and help towards giving it a conventional streetscape for the first time. At this week’s Shannon Municipal District meeting, Councillors Mike McKee and Gerry Flynn both put down motions regarding local development, while there was very widespread annoyance among the members regarding it. At Tuesday morning’s meeting, Councillor McKee said he had been amazed with the decision to give the Aldi proposal the thumbs down. “I was stunned with the reasons given and I couldn’t understand the logic,” the Sinn Féin representative said. He claimed that the development would have “taken away the stranglehold SkyCourt has on retail in Shannon”. Councillor McKee said that he hopes Aldi appeal. “I hope they appeal and are successful. For …
