A PROUD grandmother whose young grandchildren were her “best work” was how the late Josephine, better known as Josie, Lucas was fondly remembered, as family and friends gathered for her funeral mass on Wednesday. The 74-year-old died following a tragic accident involving her own car in Francis Street, Ennis on Sunday afternoon. Emergency services were called, however, despite their best efforts she was pronounced dead at the scene.  Both Mrs Lucas’ grandchildren, who were with her, were treated for shock. Her brother, Kevin told mourners at St Joseph’s Church that his sister was “determined, confident and she spoke her mind” adding she was “very proud of being from Clare.” Mrs Lucas trained to be a nurse as a teenager, meeting her future husband, Tony in London before moving back to Clare where they joined the publican trade. GARDAÍ are investigating a fatal road traffic collision which occurred on Francis Street, Ennis, this Sunday afternoon  at approximately 1.40pm. A female, 74 years, was fatally injured when she was struck by a car. The deceased was pronounced dead at scene and was brought to Limerick Regional Hospital. The road was closed at scene to facilitate Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and diversions were put in place. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Ennis Garda Station on 065 6848100, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

ENNIS born internationally-renowned artist Mick O’Dea has described his recent accident, which left him with serious injuries, as a “very close call.” The award-winning artist was brought to the Mater Hospital for surgery after an accident on Dublin’s O’Connell Street in January. He said he was “very lucky” to have escaped with his life. Mr O’Dea is now recovering at his home in Dublin, having spent a week in hospital, where he spent a number of days in intensive care. “I just have to take it easy now for a couple more weeks and try and heal,” he told The Clare Champion. He said the impact “shattered” his spleen, which had to be surgically removed. He praised the surgical team and all at the Mater Hospital saying “they saved me”. The accident occurred on January 17 when Mr O’Dea was cycling on O’Connell Street. He recalled, “I was cycling along O’Connell Street and somebody walked out in front of me …

ONE of East Clare’s leading young sportsmen died in a traffic accident on the M7, near Roscrea on Sunday night.  Eighteen-year-old Barry Nash from Tobarnagoth, Scariff was a noted  hurler and handball player, excelling in both codes. Barry was an All-Ireland and world champion in handball and a key member the Scariff senior hurling side. A brother of international handballer, Diarmuid, Barry was travelling back to college in Dublin with three friends, when the accident happened. Barry’s death has caused great sadness in the East Clare community. He reposed at his home and his funeral mass will take place at Scariff Church on Thursday, after which he will be buried at the New Cemetery, Moynoe.        

A COROFIN man in his late sixties has died following a traffic accident in Ennis on Sunday night. He was Joseph O’Loughlin of Newtown, Corofin and formerly of Roxton, Corofin, known to everyone as “small Joe”. The accident occurred in the Upper Market Street area of the town at around 10pm when the car being driven by the deceased hit a parked vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to University Hospital Limerick for a post mortem examination. Three others were in the car at the time. All three were taken to hospital but were later discharged, one with a broken arm. An area of The Market remained sealed off on Monday morning, as gardaí continued a technical examination of the accident scene.
