OLLIE, the customs dog at Shannon Airport, has become the nemesis of cannabis dealers, having denied them substantial financial returns.

Last week he foiled them for the second time in a month, uncovering a quantity of herbal cannabis with a street value estimated at €50,000.

Earlier in July, the intrepid canine uncovered a quantity of the substance valued at between €250,000 and €300,000.

Revenue revealed that the first shipment was destined for an address in Munster, but were more specific about the seizure last week, saying it was destined for a Limerick address.

“It was a routine examination of air freight and cargo coming in from Spain to Shannon,” said Pat Nagle, customs manager for Clare, Limerick and Kerry said. “The drugs were concealed in a consignment of clothing destined for Limerick.”

Mr Nagle said that the view has been formed that drug dealers are sending their wares into the country from a variety of places in Spain through air freight, which goes through Shannon.

He said Ollie has performed very well over the last month.

“We’re certainly glad that we seem to be picking up on this and that Ollie is doing his job well.

“Ollie joined us in September 2012. He’s a new dog, a young dog and he was specially trained for this. His training took up to 12 months and he’s very eager and he’s fit for a lot of work,” Pat said.
