St Stephen’s Day walk at restored O’Briensbridge Loop

PEOPLE in South-East Clare have been offered a chance to get back in shape after enjoying all the food and treats of the Christmas festivities by participating in a fundraising walk on St Stephen’s Day.

The picturesque O’Briensbridge Loop Walk will provide the ideal backdrop for a 7.5 kilometre sponsored walk to Ernagh Bridge and back to the village.

Starting at 12pm, donations will be accepted on the day for the upkeep of lovely walks, which were reopened recently thanks to members of the O’Briensbridge Montpelier Community Group.

Refreshments will be provided in Bonner’s Bar after the walk.

The O’Briensbridge loop walk is a fantastic amenity used by thousands of people each year. It is a great asset in the community, providing locals and visitors with countless hours of enjoyment on the serene banks of the Shannon.

The group recently redeveloped the walk, improving the surface. It appeals for assistance raising funds to buy equipment and materials to maintain this amazing facility.

A few months ago, the two kilometre walkway from the playground in O’Briensbridge had become so overgrown the gap between both sides had reduced down to about 12 inches in some places.

Scrub, briars and branches of trees were making it extremely difficult for two people to walk side by side, particularly any adult with a child buggy.

However, now the gap on this walkway is about five foot wide, which provides pedestrians with great comfort as they enjoy the splendid view of the River Shannon.

Donations can be made online to the O’Briensbridge Loop Walk Fundraising Page on GoFundMe, which has been set up by resident, Noel Enright on December 11.

At the time of writing, almost €1,300 has been raised, which is €300 more than the initial €1,000 target.
