Spate of car thefts in the Shannon area

GARDAÍ in Shannon are investigating a spate of car thefts in the area over the past week and are urging people to be extra security conscious. Seven cars were stolen in Shannon and Sixmilebridge with the majority of the thefts taking place over the weekend.

Five of the thefts happened between Friday and Sunday with a further two taking place last Wednesday. The Clare Champion understands the incidents involved people entering homes, taking items, including keys, before leaving the scene with the resident’s car.
“I cannot stress the need for people to be security conscious. Lock your front door. Make sure the keys are not within easy reach of a potential burglar. Do not leave valuables on display. Ensure valuable items like handbags or laptops and so on are not visible from windows or the door. We would also urge people to turn on their alarms, particularly at night and make sure not to leave their keys in the door,” a senior garda advised.
Gardaí received a report of a further burglary in the past week, this time from a home at the Ballymurtagh Halting Site in Shannon in which jewellery and a television valued at more than €4,500 were taken.
Separately, two cars were broken into in Bunratty on Saturday last and gardaí are warning people to be extra cautious when carrying valuables in their vehicles.
“Don’t leave valuables on show in your car and don’t put them in the boot of the car. If you do have to carry them in the boot then have them there before you park your car. Don’t let people see you putting things in to the boot,” the garda continued.
Some of the property stolen from the homes has been recovered while other items remain outstanding. Anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the Shannon or Sixmilebridge areas over the past week is asked to contact Shannon Garda Station on 061 361 212.
