Shopping on a budget

IT’S not always easy to kit out the whole family with new clothes, especially in current economic climate and with yet another tough budget on the way. The expectation of having to be dressed from head to toe in new clothes for Christmas can be stressful for many families, so I have decided to put some tips together so you can get the most out of your well-earned cash this season.
Having a great wardrobe on a budget take a little time and effort, together with know-how. The first step is to educate yourself on the current trends and looks of the season. Check out online fashion sites and fashion TV shows. Look through current magazines and pick up free look books available in most boutiques and high-street stores. Many high-street shops stock items that have been designed around couture looks. At a fraction of the price, these great pieces will inject some seasonal trends to your wardrobe.
Take advantage of existing items in your wardrobe too. You might have a great skirt, trousers or dress lurking in the back that has never been worn because you don’t have anything to wear with it. If so, now is the time to take it out and look for that missing item. If you have something that needs updating, why not pick up a belt or a detachable collar or scarf in this season’s colours. Before you go shopping, list the pieces you need so you won’t be distracted by the array of clothes on offer.
Consignment and charity shops are definitely worth a look. Nowadays, charity shops only accept clothes that are in good condition, while also sourcing these clothes from central depots. This means you can find new and nearly new items for a fraction of their original price.  Consignment stores are a great source for picking up occasionwear. They work by re-selling top-quality items for people (most of which might have been worn only once) and taking a percentage from the sale. High-end designer dresses, shoes and bags can often be on offer. Check out Babylon, Market Street, Ennis, which is Clare’s premier consignment store.
Vintage shopping is very on trend also. If you have an eye for the yesteryear, mixing vintage with modern is very fashionable, while also giving an individual flair to an existing item. Olive Vintage Boutique, Barrack Street, Ennis is a well established shop with great original finds.
When out shopping, I always start looking at the back of the shop first, as that is usually where you will find the bargain rails. Items reduced by 50% to 75% are the norm on these rails and with a little forward planning, you could pick up great bargains. If you know you have an occasion coming up, don’t leave it until the last minute to go shopping. Look for quality, classic, dressy items on discount rails that can be used for future occasions. Keep an eye out in local newspapers and online for local store promo events. The shops will more than likely offer a discount on that day or weekend, which is worth taking advantage of. Mid-season sales are a popular way of buying current season looks, while saving you money.
Mix and match items (different colours in similar styles) will definitely work for you. In children’s wear, this is a must also. Having an array of items that work together will get you through the season, while also saving you money.
There is, of course, an emphasis on party wear at this time of year with office parties and gatherings being organised for December. This can be a drain on finances and you can feel under pressure to look your best. Try renting an outfit. For a minimal charge you can rent a couture dress, leaving you with enough cash in the purse to enjoy your night.
For my fashion find, Check out Klassy Dress hire and sales, Main Street, Quin. This is a new boutique offering formal and occasion wear for hire and purchase. They offer an amazing range of designer dresses from both London and New York and are the only supplier in Ireland stocking the popular Bari Jay NY dresses. They also stock maternity formal wear, debs, bridesmaids, black tie, communion wear and accessories.
You can check them out online at www.klassydresshire.ie  or for more information call 087 2517272.
Until next time.
