Shannon Chamber put local focus on equality

AS part of their three month Equality and Diversity programme, which is being funded by a European Commission programme, Shannon and District Chamber will host a breakfast seminar in Westpark on Tuesday from 7.30am to 10.30am. Keynote speakers at the seminar, which is entitled Equality and Diversity-building an infrastructure, will include Deirdre Toomey from the Equality Authority; Derek McKay, managing director with Adare Human Resource Management and Alice O’Carroll, Clare Supported Employment Services Ltd.
A number of local companies that have benefited from developing employment equality and equal status policies will also speak.
Helen Downes of Shannon Chamber said, “Phase one of this project involved conducting a direct marketing survey of our 180 member companies. We wanted to assess if they have an equality policy in place; what aspect is most pertinent and, if companies have no policy in place, why not?
“We also asked them to outline what they would gain from learning more about equality and the introduction of such a policy. We have used the survey feedback to tailor the September 15 seminar. Following on from this, we will be inviting 15 companies to participate, free of charge, in an equality training programme during which they will frame an equality and diversity policy, specifically for their respective companies.”
Further information on the seminar and training workshops, which are open to members and non-members, is available from the Chamber on 061 360611/ 708341 or by email at hdownes@shannonchamber.ie.
