Shannon Airport assembles supporters

Shannon Airport has always enjoyed a lot of goodwill from the people of Clare and now an attempt is being made to harness that support in a formal way.

A meeting will take place at the airport on Wednesday, July 16, to which anyone who may be interested in becoming part of a new independent voluntary support group is invited.

Shannon’s chief executive, Neil Pakey was previously managing director of Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport and representatives of Friends of Liverpool Airport will be at the event to answer questions on how they operate and how a similar Shannon organisation might be structured.

Mr Pakey will chair the meeting. He said there is a special connection between the people of the Mid-West Region and its airport.

“There is a quite unique relationship between the region here and their airport. The public sees Shannon as much more than an airport; it is a central pillar for the wider region. There has been a major increase in the level of goodwill since Shannon was made independent 18 months ago, particularly now that we are very much in growth mode again. If the public support this, a Friends of Shannon Airport Group could help harness that passion and loyalty. We would very much welcome this level of close community involvement.”

“We would welcome closer community involvement and, as such, we would love to see people who have an interest in seeing the airport flourish coming along to this event,” said Mr Pakey.

“I will be there to chair the meeting and Friends of Liverpool Airport members will be available to answer questions on how their organisation and how a similar Shannon organisation could be structured.

FoLA was established by a small group of enthusiasts and people with a genuine interest in the wellbeing of Liverpool Airport. Since then, it has grown beyond their expectations. Their membership consists of people who want to be informed about the airport, people who volunteer their spare time to help with specific airport needs, such as tourism promotion and school tours,” he said.
