Second-half control gives Corofin victory

U-14 Division 3 Football Championship

Corofin 4-12
Clooney-Quinn 0-4

Corofin defeated Clooney-Quin in the U-14 Division 3 football championship final in Cusack Park on Monday.
The large scoring difference suggests a one-sided final but this would not be a true picture as Clooney-Quin were very much in the game at half-time, trailing by just a goal.

Corofin’s Eoin Clancy battles for possession with Rory Corbett.Liam O’Donovan and Michael Kelly had early points for the winners but Conor Grogan and Eanna Barry had the sides level after 12 minutes. Paul Leamy helped to keep Clooney-Quin in the game midway through the half, saving well from a Dean Ruane penalty kick. However, Corofin did find the net after 21 minutes when Liam O’Donovan finished well after a surging solo run.
Points by Corofin’s Dean Ruane and James Tyler were again cancelled out by Rory Corbett and Conor Grogan, with Clooney-Quin finishing the half strongly, leaving Corofin ahead by 1-4 to 0-4.
After half-time, an early blitz of scores from Corofin effectively finished off the game.
Michael Kelly again pointed early on and James Tyler kicked to the net after two minutes. Kelly added another point before Liam O’Donovan scored a goal and a point, putting his team well ahead. Further well-taken points from Michael Kelly, Liam O’Donovan and Fergus Killeen had Corofin 3-8 to 0-4 ahead after 11 minutes.
A missed penalty by Clooney-Quin after 14 minutes didn’t help their efforts to get back into the game, which at this stage was running to its inevitable conclusion.
Substitute Sean Moynihan added a fourth goal after 17 minutes and two points from Shane Farr and a long-range kick from Fergus Killeen completed the scoring for Corofin.
While Corofin were worthy winners on the evening, Clooney-Quin competed to the end
