Sarah secures place on Munster team


SARAH Cunningham from the Ennis club has been chosen on the Munster team for the women’s inter-provincial championships to be played at the Island in Dublin from April 7 to 9.

The team captain is Valerie Hassett from Ennis and the manager is Valerie Hannon, Lahinch. The other members of the team are Sarah Crowe (Tipperary), Aoife Lowry (Tipperary), Laura McCarthy (Muskerry), Gillian O’Leary (Cork), Karen O’Neill (Douglas), Chloe Ryan (Castletroy) and Linda Toomey (Limerick).

Clare-Galway seniors
JIMMY McNamara (Ennis) was the winner of Round 7 of the Clare-Galway seniors league, played over 16 holes, at East Clare last week when he returned 41 points.
He had three to spare over Michael O’Grady from Gort with another Gort member, Gerry Cooney, finished in third spot on 37 points. They were followed by Paul Higgins (Ennis), John Ryan (Gort) and Tony Coote (Ennis), all with 36 points. Next came Dermot Lynch (Woodstock), Willie Moloney (Ennis) and Bernard O’Loughlin (Ennis) all with 35 points while the final place was filled by Owen O’Donnell (Gort) with 34 points. Noel Pyne (Ennis) won the gross with 30 points.
The penultimate round of the league will be played at Portumna next Wednesday.

Kilrush
MICHAEL Studdert’s team leads after two rounds of the spring league at Kilrush with 109 points. They have two to spare from Jimmy McSwiggan’s side with Donal Kenny’s team in third spot on 102 points followed by Declan Marrinan’s team on 101 and Finbarr McMahon’s team on 96.
Seán Lyons had the best individual score last week with 30 points from John Green who had a similar score with Barry McMahon in third spot on 29 points. The leading lady is Anne Gallagher with 25 points.
Last week’s seniors’ competition at Kilrush was won by John Stapleton, Joe Ryan and John Robinson with 57 points. They won by six from TJ Lyons, Tom Cleary and Paddy Carmody with third spot filled by Jimmy McSwiggan, Noel Enright, Brendan Murphy and Maurice Roche on 50 points.

Ennis seniors
ENNIS seniors held a scramble last week when the winners were John Cullinan, George Dilger, Paul Mockler and Charlie McEnery with 42.4. They were followed by David O’Brien, Michael Byrne and John White on 47.2 with third spot filled by Frank Sheedy, Seamus Hanrahan and Michael Nunan with 47.8.

Woodstock
SEAMUS Kelly was the winner of the men’s competition at Woodstock with 41 points from Martin Nugent who had a similar score with Michael Nugent in third spot on 38 points.
The captain’s drive-in will take place this Sunday at 2.30pm and will be followed by a mixed scramble.
The winter league first round will take place this Saturday and Sunday. There will be a poker classic this Friday night and tickets are available from the Pro shot.

Ennis
FLAN Glynn was the winner of the men’s singles at Ennis on Sunday with 42 points from Cyril Corry who had a similar score. John Neylon was third on 40 points followed by David Rushe on 39 and Patrick Garry who also had 39 points.
There will be a men’s fourball this Sunday.
In the ladies’ section, the winner of the 12-hole Stableford competition was Bernie Browne from Kathleen Frehill and both scored 30 points. Aideen Considine was in third spot.
In the ladies’ seniors’ section, the winners were Patricia O’Donnell, Kate O’Ceallaigh and Susan O’Brien from Claire Ruane, Nuala Guinan and Mary Hennessy with third spot filled by Mary Colton, Phil Butler, Mary McMahon and Anna Glynn.

Kilkee
NOEL Roche was the individual winner in week eight of the winter league at Kilkee with 35 points while the winning team comprised John McGuire, John Garvey and Tom Carr with 90 points.

Shannon
THE Ladies’ Winter League at Shannon came to a successful conclusion with a team comprising Lyn Darcy, Connie Corry and Hilary Park capturing the honours with 169 points having returned 53 points for their final week.
This was primarily due to Hilary Park returning a best of competition score of 31 points. They had two points to spare from De Captains comprising Mary Sheehan, Marie Hogan and Marian Boyce while in third place were The Warriors comprising Jean Murphy-Wright, Ailish Sheehan and Mary McGuane on 165 points.
The semi-finals of the Men’s Winter League saw both matches go to the wire and finish on a 3-2 scoreline. Team A captained by Michael Corry defeated Team C captained by Daniel Brennan and Team B captained by Jamie O’Shea overcame Team D captained by Kevin Moylan. The final is scheduled for this Sunday.
Scoring was excellent in the men’s modified scramble last week-end played over 15 holes. The winners with 52 points were Dermot Finnan, Jim McNamara, Colm O’Flynn and Damien Dillon while the runners-up on 50 points were Dennis O’Brien, William O’Brien, John Curley and Jarlaith O’Looney

Portumna
IN the 15-hole hampers competition at Portumna last weekend, Lesley O’Meara (0-10) with 35 points, Kevin Donnellan (11-14) with 35 points, Seán Whelan (15-18) with 35 points, John Lynch (19 and over) with 36 points and TJ O’Callaghan (seniors) with 36 points, were the winners.
The spring league finally got off the ground last weekend. Teams can still enter and play the first round on or before this Saturday.

Gort
ADRIAN Conway and Pat Gill were the winners of the 18-hole fourball at Gort at the weekend with 46 points from David Kehoe and Kevin Martyn on 44 points with third spot filled by Barry Cahill and Robin Lahiffe on 43 points.
There will be an 18-hole singles competition this week.

East Clare
THE team led by last year’s captain Ger Hogan has emerged as the overall winners in the winter league at East Clare following the final round of games last week. They finished with 90 points and won from Kevin O’Brien’s team which had 85.5 points with third spot filled by Flan Clune’s team on 76 points.
The other members of the winning team are Liam Nolan, Joe Fitzgerald, Terry Mulvihill, Catherine Minogue and Danny Minogue. Runners-up, Kevin O’Brien’s team comprised William O’Brien, Liam Doyle, Connie McKenna, Frank O’Meara and lady captain, Mary Beatty. Flan Clune’s team included Tony Stuart, Siobhán Shanahan, Pat Corry, Leo Mannion and Fiona Kinsella.
Meanwhile, last Sunday’s 14-hole singles was won by Tony McNulty with 32 points from Brendan McInerney on 31 points.

Sixmilebridge
SIXMILEBRIDGE society will kick off their outings for 2010 this Saturday in Ennis. The tee is reserved from 10am to 11am. New members will be welcome

Quin-Clooney
THE next outing of the Quin-Clooney Society will take place to the Castle course in Lahinch on Saturday, March 13 when the tee will be available from 10.30am.

Pitch and putt
AT the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday, the winners of the stroke play competition were Marty Fawl (senior) Paddy Sheedy (intermediate) and Denis Mc Elligott (junior).
The Mickey Kerin shield will be played for this Sunday.

Legends launched
GAA president Christy Cooney last week launched the 2010 GAA Legends All-Ireland Charity Golf Inter-County Championships which takes place in La Cala Resort, Costa del Sol between May 12 and 15.
The charity, which is one of the association’s two official charities for 2009 / 2010, involves teams from all 32 counties, made up of former inter-county footballers and hurlers competing in a golf championship for the top prize.
The combined monies collected from all teams entered will be divided between the chosen charities of the winning team.
Organising committee chairperson Bernard Flynn, thanked the GAA for their support and also acknowledged the fundraising efforts of the players

Annual information meeting
THE Irish Ladies’ Golf Union annual information meeting for clubs in the southern district takes place this Saturday at Mallow GAA Complex at 12noon. All clubs in the district are encouraged to send three representatives to this meeting, honorary secretary, handicap secretary and junior officer.
This is a most important meeting for clubs in the southern district for discussions on changes to AA Championship for 2010, handicap queries and details of upcoming competitions for women and girls.
