Saddled with greatness


The brilliant sunshine, excellent field conditions and superbly built courses in all competitions resulted in very entertaining and successful showjumping at Corofin Show last Saturday. There was a total of 317 competitors in SJI-registered competitions and 46 in Sportsmans.

Most were won by Clare competitors but some also went to Cork, Limerick and Galway. There were thrilling rounds against the clock in the open pony classes with only fractions of a second between competitors’ times.

The Jack Daly Cup in the 128 90cm pony competition was won by Abbie Sweetman from Cork but the Christopher O’Grady Cup in the 128 1m stayed in Clare, won by Thomas Costello, Newmarket-on-Fergus.

Kevin McCabe from Galway took home the Lahiff Tractors Cup in the 138 1m while the 138 1.10m Val O’Sullivan Trophy was won by Brian Fitzgerald from Adare, Limerick, riding County Express owned by Corofin Show Committee member, Tom Kearney.

The very successful international pony rider Tom Foley won the 148 1.10m taking home the Barry Trophy and Sarah Costello from Quin won the 148 1.20m and was presented with the Pat Quinn Cup. Sarah also won the overall leading pony rider trophy.

Anthony O’Brien from Miltown Malbay won the Ian Brasil Cup in the 1m horses and also the James O’Brien Cup in the 1.10m. The Bofey Quinn cup in the 1.20m horses was won by Tom Foley whose sister Yvonne won the Tom Corry Memorial Cup in the Amateur Competition.

Sportsmans

There was a total of 46 entries in the Sportsmans competitions with local riders Elisha Corry, Fiona Killeen, Sean Killeen and Skye Stagno Navarra getting rosettes in the 60/70cm section. In the 80/90cm section, Seamus O’Grady and Aoife Hegarty were successful local riders.
