A DVD version of the highly acclaimed film Last Night As I Lay Dreaming looks set to bring the legendary Spancilhill composer and singer Robbie McMahon a whole new set of fans from around the world.
That’s according to Frank Whelan, the film’s producer, speaking ahead of the launch this Friday at Cois na hAbhna in Ennis.
“The audience reaction at the first showing of the film convinced us we had something special. Then it was selected to be shown at the Galway Film Fleadh and the response there was tremendous.
“Since then, we have shown it at festivals and events throughout Ireland and abroad and the reaction has always been the same. Everywhere we go we are asked ‘Is it available on DVD and where can I get it?’ We’ve had emails from around the world from people who’ve read about the film on the website, all wanting to know how they can get a copy.”
Last Night As I Lay Dreaming explores the life and song of traditional singer Robbie McMahon.
It features interviews with those who have known McMahon over the years as well as contributions that set his achievements in a wider context, highlighting the important role the singer and songwriter has traditionally played in their local communities, recording significant events and keeping that memory alive for future generations.
Robbie himself, who has attended many of the screenings around the country is delighted with the success of the film and looking forward to the launch of the DVD.
“To be honest with you I wasn’t sure what to expect when we went to see it first. The filming went on for a long time, at singing sessions and here in the house and I nearly forgot it was being made until we were all invited to this big premiere in Cois na hAbhna. It was that good and interesting that I nearly forgot that it was about me. I remember saying to Maura coming home in the car that ‘twould be a great film, even if I wasn’t in it,’” he said.
For Robbie one of the best experiences of the film has been sharing his singing with people who might never have the opportunity see him perform live.
“We had a showing during Fleadh Nua over in Glór and from what I could make out, there were people there from all over the world. And they were coming up to me afterwards saying how much they enjoyed it. I think I even signed a few autographs that day. It’s great to think that songs about your own people and place can mean so much to someone from the other side of the world. And with the film on DVD now, who knows where it might end up,” he said.
Last Night As I Lay Dreaming DVD and sountrack CD launch takes place at Cois na hAbhna, Ennis, on Friday at 8.30pm. Admission is free.
