Rice College win schools hurling title

Three opportunist goals in the second half helped Rice College to capture the Clare first year hurling schools title against  near neighbours, St Flannan’s College.

Both schools produced a pulsating hour’s hurling at Cusack Park last Wednesday and showed that there is great young talent in Clare hurling at the moment. The two teams were slow to settle into the game and after 20 minutes of play, they were deadlocked at two points a piece with Colm Fitzgerald of Rice College and Padraig McNamara opening the account for both schools. However, Rice College, with a slight breeze at their backs, managed to tag on a few points at the latter stages of the first half, thanks to great scores from Conor Grogan and Eanna O’Connor to leave the score at five points to three in favour of the Rice College outfit.
With the breeze at their backs for the second 30 minutes, a St Flannan’s onslaught was expected. However, this did not materialise. Rice College were dominant in this half, winning the battles all over the field and especially in the half-back line, where captain Conor Finnucane and Shane McInerney were particularly outstanding.
A three-goal blitz in this half turned the game for Rice College with Evan Wiley, Eanna O’Connor and Liam Lynch doing the damage. Further scores from Colm Fitzgerald and Killian Brennan put the icing on the cake and brought the cup back to Rice College for the first time in six years.
Lee Brady had a masterful hour at full-back, while the half-back line broke up many of the St Flannan’s attacks. The midfield players worked tirelessly, while Conor Grogan, Killian Brennan, Colm Fitzgerald and Eanna O’Connor were the pick of the forward line, which worked well as a unit.
Best for St Flannan’s were Padraig McNamara and Eoin Hanrahan.
Rice College will take on Middleton CBS in the U-14A Munster quarter-final this week.
