O’Neill sets new Munster high jump record

Photograph by Declan Monaghan  CLARE athletes won 13 medals, four gold, four silver and five bronze, at the Munster juvenile U-9, U-10 and U-11 2×2 team events, plus the boys and girls’ U-12 and U-13 Track and Field Championships, which were held over two days at the Lees Road Sports Complex.
It is was the first time that the championships were held at the venue and the event attracted over 2,000 people.
The star of the show on day one was Alex O’Neill, St Cronan’s, who set a new Munster record in the girls’ U-12 high jump at 1.37m, along with Vicky Cusack, Liscarroll, Cork.
They both went for 1.40m and failed on the final three jumps, with Alex taking the silver medal. She also captured a silver medal in the 600m.
Day two was held in very wet conditions. Tara Kelly, St Mary’s, won the girls’ U-12 long jump and Alex O’Neill captured the bronze medal, with Grace Moloney, Tulla winning the U-12 ball throw.
In the girls’ U-13 600m, five Clare athletes were in the final, where Elaine Shannon, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, won a bronze medal.
In the 4x100m relay, Kilmihil won a bronze medal in the girls’ U-9 event, with Shauna O’Gorman, Zoe Ryan, Niamh Burke and Niamh Quinlivan making up the team.
In the boys’ U-9 2×2 team 60m, Ennis Track’s team of Sultan Akinwale and Jack O’Connor won gold and they also captured a bronze medal in the 300m and a silver medal in the 4x100m relay.
In the boys’ U-12 event, Ennis Track’s Tony Odubote won a silver medal with Caoilfhionn O’Dea, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, taking a bronze medal in the 600m.
The big win of the day came in the boys’ U-13 600m with Jamie Roche, Ennis Track, winning the gold medal and Eoin Looney, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, capturing the silver medal.
