CLARE County Council is planning to introduce a new one-way traffic system on the main street in Scariff in a bid to alleviate traffic congestion for locals and visitors.
It is proposed the traffic will go in one direction along the main street from Scariff Bridge to the junction of the Feakle Road as indicated on drawings, which are available for inspection at the county council’s roads department, New Road, Ennis or the Scariff Area Office, Scariff.
Objections or representations in relation to the new plan may be made in writing to the senior staff officer, transportation, Clare County Council.
Addressing councillors at a recent Killaloe Electoral Area meeting in Scariff, senior executive engineer, Seán Lenihan said he hoped there would not be too many changes to their plans.
Mr Lenihan noted that there was a general consensus of the need for change to alleviate traffic congestion following discussions with local traders, the community council and county councillors.
Traffic will now have to go one way from Bank of Ireland to the Market House, while parking will be available on both sides.
Having completed a lot of work preparing these plans, he hoped that the council wouldn’t get too many shocks once the public consultation process is fully completed.
If the new system is introduced, he explained parking at Jones Road would have to be removed to facilitate two-way traffic particularly heavy goods vehicles.
Killaloe Electoral Area chairman, Councillor Joe Cooney said it was good to see proposals coming from the council to improve traffic flow in Scariff.
Mayor of Clare, Councillor Pat Hayes warned that tourists and visitors were by-passing Scariff because of the difficulty getting through the town as a result of traffic congestion.
Supporting the new plan, he said it would make it much easier for motorists to drive through the East Clare town.
