O’Donovan injury a blow to Clare hopes

DOMHNAILL O’Donovan is a major doubt for Clare’s Munster senior hurling semi-final against either Tipperary or Cork on June 19.
The Clonlara man, one of the team’s better performers in the recent Division 2 league final against Limerick, is sidelined with a ruptured disc, which has ruled him out of this weekend’s Clare Senior Hurling Championship game in which Clonlara will meet Broadford at Cusack Park on Sunday evening.
“I was a bit sickened when I saw the results of the scan. I didn’t think that there was much there but the scan showed up the problem,” he told The Clare Champion this week.
“It started with a pain in the week leading up to the Limerick game and it got worse after the game, sending pains down the leg. An MRI scan showed up the problem,” the Clonlara man explained.
While he is holding out hope of making the Munster semi-final, the odds looked to be stacked against him at this stage.
This is the only injury concern facing manager, Ger O’Loughlin and his selectors at this time.
“With a full list of club championship games this weekend, we will be keeping our fingers crossed that everyone comes through without injury,” O’Loughlin said this week.
Understandably, he was disappointed with the news of O’Donovan’s injury.
“Yes, it is a blow and I am particularly disappointed for the player. He is one of the leaders in the squad and he has put in a huge effort all season,” the Clarecastle man added.
The manager confirmed the players are back with their clubs this week ahead of the weekend’s games in round two of the senior and intermediate hurling championships. They will resume training next week for their date with either Cork (in Thurles) or Tipperary (in Limerick). Two challenge games are planned ahead of that tie.
O’Loughlin and selectors, Liam Doyle and Danny Chaplin, are sure to be keeping a close eye on proceedings in Thurles on Sunday when Tipperary and Cork meet in the opening game of this year’s Munster Senior Hurling Championship race, the winners of which will carry the favourites’ tag into their clash with Clare.
