SENATOR David Norris has joined a growing list of public figures lending their support to the campaign to have the Cliffs of Moher named one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

On a recent visit to County Clare, Senator Norris, who himself hopes for success in the upcoming presidential campaign, took the opportunity to vote again for the Cliffs of Moher on a visit to the spectacular site.
Senator Norris joins other public figures, including movie director Jim Sheridan, singer Maura O’Connell and boxer Barry McGuigan, who all recently espoused the case of the Cliffs of Moher as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The campaign, which has been running since 2008, is now in the final stage with the result being determined by public votes cast online.
“I voted for the Cliffs of Moher in the previous round of the campaign and I’m delighted to see them in the final 28 in the world. I urge everyone to get out and vote again in the current and final round of voting to see this marvellous natural wonder elected one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature,” encouraged Senator Norris following his visit.
The senator was taken on a tour of the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience by director, Katherine Webster following a morning of meetings and media interviews. He expressed a little disappointment at not getting to see a ‘prowler’; one of the spectacular surfing waves that rise off the west coast of Ireland but otherwise was highly impressed with the visitor centre and facilities as his previous visit to the Cliffs had been some 10 years or so ago.
“Overseas friends of mine visited the West of Ireland during last summer and were wildly enthusiastic about the Cliffs of Moher when they returned to stay with me .They are one of the jewels in the crown of Irish tourism and they richly deserve to be recognised as a global natural wonder,” he continued.
The senator met members of staff at the visitor centre, gift shop and café and reminisced about attending the Merriman School in Lisdoonvarna.
Senator Norris recently topped the poll in a Red C survey of the favourites to become the next President. Irish bookmakers Paddy Power are currently offering favourite odds of 7/2 on his success in the election, which is due to take place in the latter half of 2011. Before running in the election, Senator Norris must first secure a nomination, which requires the support of 20 members of the Oireachtas or four county councils.
The result of the New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign will also be determined at the end of 2011 with the announcement to be made on November 11, 2011. Votes for the Cliffs of Moher can be cast on www.new7wonders.com.
