New captains drive in at Woodstock club

THE 2012 captains and presidents at Woodstock drove into office on Sunday afternoon watched by a good turnout of members.
James Carmody and Ann Marie Russell are the captains with James Meade as club president and Eugene Phillips as the seniors’ captain.
Meanwhile, the spring league continued and the format in week five was a rumble. The members of the winning team are Jason Dormer, Paul Coote, Michael Nugent and Andrew Mason with 99 points.
In the club singles, Thomas Barrett (18) was the winner with 46 points.
The competition continues this week when the format will be singles. 
In the weekly seniors’ competition, played over 15 holes, Dermot O’Neill and Tom Malone were the winners with 39 points.

Lahinch
LAST week’s ladies’ singles Stableford competition on the championship course at Lahinch was won by Barbara Foley (17) with 41 points from Maria Nolan (24) with 37 points with third spot filled by Vera Madden (19) with 36 points.
The monthly medal, a men’s singles competition, was played for on Saturday and the winner was Dan O’Donovan (11) with 66 nett from Gerry O’Mahoney (7) with 68 and Colm McInerney (12) with 68. Peter Hennessy won the gross with 74
In the men’s singles competition on Sunday, Colm Hayes (21) won with 42 points from Kevin Glynn (10) with a similar score and Bill Frazer (13) with 41 points.  Paul O’Brien won the gross with 33 points.

Ennis
ENNIS seniors held a team-of-four competition last week when the winners were Gerry Gilligan, Michael Considine, Dickie Pyne and John Finn with 54 points. They were followed by Jimmy Kearns, Paul Mockler, Pat Rutherford and Ferdie O’Donoghue with 52 points with third spot filled by Johnny Cullinan, Charlie McEnery, Terry Hughes and Tony Blake with 52 points. In fourth spot, with 51 points, were John White, Conor Murphy, Frank Landy and Sean O’Gorman followed by Peadar Cosgrove, Ned Ryan, George Dilger and Michael Butler with 50 points. In sixth place were Sean Fitzpatrick, Noel Connellan, James Ball and Frank Sheedy.
The final round of the Clare/Galway Alliance Winter League will be held in Gort on Wednesday next.
In the weekend men’s fourball at Ennis, Dave Pender and John Lillis were the winners with 45 points from Eamonn Murphy and Liam McCannon who had a similar score. John Neylon and Liam Pyne were third with 44 followed by John Hoey and Noel Normoyle with 44.

East Clare

BRENDAN Moloney (11) was the winner of the men’s 18-hole singles competition at East Clare at the weekend with 46 points. In second place, with a similar score, was Pat Stritch (21) followed by Kieran Kennedy (13) with 45 points.
The ladies’ 18-hole singles was won by Mary Collins with 37 points from Siobhán Shanahan with a similar score and Catherine Murphy.
In the ladies’ seniors, the winners were Nancy Starr, Pat Williams and Hannah Guinnane from Catherine Murphy, Ina Reddan and Mary Joe Minogue.
There will be an open weekend of competition at the club from this Friday to Monday.

Kilrush
AFTER week four of the spring league at Kilrush, Pat Murtagh’s team leads from Gearóid Willians team with Michael Hogan’s team in third spot.
There will be a play-off this Sunday with the draw taking place this Friday
There will be a scramble on Bank Holiday Monday with a draw for partners at 2pm.
In the Clare-Galway seniors outing to Kilrush last week, local member Ollie McNamara was the winner, while other locals to feature were Tom Prendeville, Jimmy McSwiggan and Brendan McNamara.

Portumna
THERE was a men’s 14-hole competition at Portumna at the weekend when Mick Keyes (10) was the winner of the 0-10 category with 31 points. Damian Howe (12) won the 11-14 category with 29 points, Brian Fahey (16) won the 15-18 category with 34 points and Tiernan McKeogh (22) won the 19 and over section with 33 points. Tony Cummins (21) won the seniors’ section with 33 points.
In the ladies’ section, Pauline McEvoy (26) was the winner with 34 points from Anne Cassidy (4) with 30 points and Mary Conwell (26) with 29 points. 
The open three-ball continues until the end of April. There will be a men’s open singles this Sunday, while the weekly open continues on Mondays. There will be a father-and-son open fourball on Good Friday, April 6 with a men’s open fourball throughout Easter weekend. 

Gort
MEMBERS of the winning team in the men’s winter league at Gort are Paul Smith, Kieran Reddy, Ed Purcell, Seamus Burke and John Daly.
In the singles competition at the weekend, the winner was Pat Boyle with 43 points from Shane Keane on 42, Paul Smith on 41 and noel Geoghegan on 40. David Quirke won the gross with 34 points.
In the weekly open singles, the winner was Andreas Edler with 43 points from Niall Gillane with 40.
In the ladies’ section, the winners were Josie Collins and Sue Madden with 33 points. There will be a singles Stableford competition this weekend.

Spanish Point

WITH the golf season coming into full swing, captain, Noel McMahon, has reminded members that the inter-club team sheets will be on the noticeboards and interested players should make sure their names are added to those lists.
First up is the Munster Country Clubs Cup against Templemore in Dromoland on Saturday, April 28. This is one of the oldest competitions in Munster and is for clubs with less than 18 holes. Eighteen teams have entered. The format is matchplay with each team comprising seven members with handicap of 10 or over from 2011.
Teams are also entered for Pierce Purcell, Jimmy Bruen, Independent Mixed, JB Carr and the annual challenge for the Hillery/Lynch Shield against Ringenane Golf Club, Cork. Despite the bad day, the seniors played their open on Tuesday and Len Wilson (15) won with 39 points.
Last week, a large entry played in good conditions with excellent scores returned. The winner was Donal Burke (20) with 42 points followed by Noel Skerritt (12) with 41 points, Michael Kenny (10) with 41 points, Joe O’Rourke (16) with 41 points and Paidi McGough (12) with 41 points.

Dromoland
DROMOLAND captains, Willie Fitzgerald and Maureen McKeogh will drive-in to office this Saturday at 3.30pm. The drive-in will be preceeded by a nine-hole scramble.
Last week’s competition winner was Hugh O’Neill with 45 points from Willie Fitzgerald with 40 points, Niall Geraghty with 40 points and Seamus Cusack with 39 points, while the junior winner was Sean Shanahan with 42 points.
The winter league is finished and over the St Patrick’s Bank Holiday weekend, there will be an 18-hole single Stableford event with re-entry.

Clare hurlers

A GOLF classic in aid of the Clare hurlers’ training fund will take place at Shannon on May 3, 4 and 5. This will be a team-of-four event and a timesheet is in operation with details available from team manager Davy Fitzgerald.

Sixmilebridge
SIXMILEBRIDGE Society held an outing to Woodstock on Saturday when the winner was Bobby Deegan from Colin Murphy with Aidan Whelan in third spot. The nines were won by Paudge Flannery and Russ Throw, while the category prizes were won by John Nihill, Paudge Flannery and Mike Ryan.

Corofin
COROFIN Golf Society’s weekend away for 2012 will be to Waterford from Thursday, April 12 to Sunday, April 15. Already there has been great interest from members and friends for the outing, which will feature golf at three leading resorts, Mount Juliet, Faithleg House and Waterford Castle. The base for the weekend is Tracey’s Hotel in Waterford City.
Meanwhile, the local society held their first outing to Doonbeg last Sunday and had a most enjoyable competition in ideal weather conditions. Pat McCarthy was the winner with the minor places being taken by Darren Kierce, David O’Dell and John Daly. David Daly and John Tierney won the nines.

Pitch and putt
THE winners of the three-ball scramble at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday were Noel Cuddihy, Denis McElligott and Michael Kerin.
The McElligott Shield will be played for this Sunday.
