National art prize for Mia

A six-year-old girl from North Clare this week came third in the primary school section of the Boyne Valley Honey Book of Kells National Art Competition.
Mia Farrell from Burren was honoured for her bespoke work of art inspired by the Book of Kells at a ceremony with Miriam O’Callaghan and guests at The Long Room in Trinity College, Dublin on April 21.
Upon receiving her award from Miriam O’Callaghan last Thursday night, Mia turned around to her dad and asked, “Does this mean I’m famous now?”
The event was the culmination of a five-month national art competition, which invited primary, secondary and third-level students and adults, to submit a work of art based on either The Book of Kells itself, the monks who illustrated the manuscript, the materials they used to create it, or life in ninth century Ireland.
Dr Edward McParland, who awarded Mia her prize on the night, commented, “Mia really tackled the brief with great aplomb by creating a work of art that manages to encapsulate the lives of the ninth century monks, while at the same having fun with the detail in the border. The judges were especially captivated with the way Mia drew a very big happy face on each of her lions that were included prowling amongst the painting’s border.”
Mia’s winning entry will remain on display in the Long Room, Old Library, Trinity College, Dublin for a limited period.
