Musical society tuning up for annual show

THE next few weeks are set to be busy ones for all those involved in the Shannon Musical Society, as they go into overdrive preparing for their production of The Wedding Singer.
The society’s PRO Mary Forde said there are only a few weeks left now, before one of the annual highlights of Shannon’s social calendar.
“The show will be on from February 20 to 26 and as well as the nightly shows, there will be a matinee on February 26. Rehearsals have been on during the week and now they will be held at the weekends too. The booking office will be opening on January 14 in the town centre.”
She said there has been a gradual intensification of effort since things got going early last year and things are about to step up another gear.
“Oh yeah, it’s all go. We first started off months ago doing one night, then it goes to two nights then it is building and building all the time but it’s very enjoyable. It’s a really good laugh. You’re preparing all the time, so it’s not like the show just comes up suddenly.”
She said this year’s show is being produced by Aodán Fox, who is highly regarded. “He has been in several shows but this is his first one in Shannon. He is excellent, very easy to deal with and very professional,” she said.
This is the 33rd production of the society and Mary said a number of people have had a very long involvement. The Wedding Singer has a score that pays homage to the pop songs of the ’80s and is very evocative of that time.
She said commitment is important as the show finally approaches. “Everybody is hands on and they really need to be there for the rehearsals. It’s very important, although of course sometimes things come up and people have to miss one.”
As well as acting as PRO, Mary works on props for the production and says help will be appreciated. “At the moment I’m looking for headless dummies on a stand. We’d consider buying them but if anyone could help it’d be great because funds are tight,” Mary concluded.
