CLARE Community Games had another great weekend at the last of the national finals for 2010 in Athlone last week. Clare had 159 children from 22 areas from Carrigaholt/Cross to O’Brien’s Bridge taking part.
They brought home a total of 73 medals – eight gold, 27 silver, 24 bronze and 14 fourth-place medals. The competition was extremely high in athletics.
There was a notable double for Clare in the U-14 shot putt as Deirbhile Ryan from Clonlara and Eoin Hanrahan from Doora-Barefield won gold.
Angharad Loughnane from Kilkishen/O’Callaghan’s Mills/Oatfield had a very comfortable win in the U-13 walk, an event she is eligible to participate in for the next two years.
On Saturday, most of the Clare athletes and relays qualified for semi-finals and a large number of those also qualified for the finals.
In team events, Ennis St John’s boys’ Futsal U-13 team had a great win in their semi-final, as did the Sixmilebridge/Kilmurry boys’ rounders U-15.  Clarecastle/Ballyea tag rugby U-11 and Clarecastle/Ballyea girls’ rounders U-13 were narrowly defeated but qualified for the play-offs on Sunday morning.
