Mayor’s appeal to candidates

SIR – As Mayor of County Clare, I am very much aware of the strategic needs of the county as expressed by councillors at county council meetings.

I am also aware of the vision, goals and objectives set out in the recently adopted Clare County Development Plan, which will guide future growth and development within the county during the next six years.  One of the key challenges during that time will be to secure the effective implementation of the identified goals and objectives of the plan.
The fact that the County Development Plan has been adopted at this time is of great advantage to Clare having regard to the fact that the county is now in the process of electing representatives to national government.  Many of the objectives in the County Development Plan will require action and support at national level, and the objectives and goals of the plan are, in essence, a to-do list for the incoming government representatives elected by the people of County Clare.
In order to assist the newly elected representatives in their task, I will be inviting them to meet with me after the election has concluded.  At that meeting, I will brief the Dáil members on the objectives set out in the County Development Plan and on other strategic priorities as articulated by councillors at local level which can be delivered by our representatives at national level.
However, I am of the opinion that a mechanism must be in place whereby the representatives of the people of Clare elected at a local level – Clare County Council – can be briefed by the representatives of the people of Clare at national level – Dáil Éireann –  in relation to progress being made on the implementation of strategic initiatives, which are necessary for the growth and development of the county and on the enhancement of public service delivery for the people of the county.
In that regard, I am now issuing an invitation to the candidates for the Clare constituency to confirm that, if elected, they agree to brief the elected members of Clare County Council on a half yearly basis in relation to progress in the delivery of key strategic objectives and the enhancement of public service delivery for the people of County Clare.
I wish to assure the in-coming Dáil members that Clare County Council will continue to brief them on the activities of the council and that existing arrangements for regular meetings with the council executive will remain in place.
I am issuing this invitation in a spirit of partnership to create a framework within which elected representatives at local and national level can work together in the interests of the people of County Clare and in the spirit of respect for the roles of both the councillors and the  Oireachtas members.

Mayor of Clare,
Christy Curtin.
