Newmarket 1-14 Tulla 0-15

NEWMARKET completed their league section of the senior hurling championship with maximum points after this hard-earned win over Tulla at Cusack Park on Sunday.
The Blues may have gone into the game as warm favourites but they had to battle all the way to the final whistle before emerging with a victory they just about deserved on a day when Colin Ryan’s contribution of 0-11 proved decisive.
The teams were level on a number of occasions during the hour and it was Newmarket substitute Seanie Arthur’s goal, which proved decisive in the end.
The sides went to the break level at 0-7 each, with Colin Ryan scoring five of his team’s points and the remaining two coming from Mike McInerney and Sean O’Connor.
Andrew Quinn, David McInerney, Brian Quinn, Ray Stewart, Eanna Torpey and Brian Lynch were on the first-half scoresheet for Tulla, who went into this game chasing their first win in this campaign.
Andrew Quinn and minor Ray McInerney had early second-half points for Tulla but two Colin Ryan efforts ensured that they were level again and then Arthur struck for the game’s only goal.
A Ryan point followed and Newmarket were four clear for the first and only time in the game.
Tulla’s response was very impressive and four points in five minutes from Ray Stewart (2) Aidan Lynch and David McInerney levelled the game at 0-13 to 1-10.
Ryan and Aidan Lynch exchanged points before Ryan and David Barrett edged the Blues into a lead they held to the end.
Colin Ryan’s contribution proved vital on the day while Sean O’Connor, Stephen Kelly and Enda Barrett did well on the day.
County minor panellist David McInerney had a fine game for Tulla at midfield while Philip and John Brennan, Mark Quinn and Ray Stewart were others to do well for the champions of 2007.
