Liscannor opens another New Season

LISCANNOR will again have the honour of opening the new coursing season this coming weekend. And they will stage the fixture on their usual days, Saturday and Sunday.
The situation up to lunchtime on Monday last was that coursing could not go ahead prior to Sunday, September 26. Liscannor had resigned themselves to coursing on Sunday and Monday but on Monday last, the ICC was informed that the Minister for the Environment had given permission to course a day earlier.
Liscannor had no problem in the switching to Saturday and Sunday but Kilflynn have opted to stay with their original dates of Sunday and Monday.
When asked to comment on the minister’s decision, DJ Histon, ICC secretary, told The Clare Champion that even though they had received notification of the change only a few days prior to the start-up of the new season, it was welcome nonetheless. Liscannor were availing of the new situation and he had no doubt that they would able to meet the new date and get the season off to a lively start.
He added that with a new season, the ICC and coursing clubs faced new challenges with hare conservation very much in mind. From the start of the new season, all roads would be pointing towards Clonmel for the national finals and he wished all clubs every success for the 2010-2011 season.
Liscannor are up and running and rearing to go. They have an exciting card with the prospect of some great buckles.
The challenge for the all-age dog stake looks interesting and bookmaker, Denis Gould has installed Windfarm Eiscir as the 6/4 favourite. Trained by Pat Curtin for Claire Eustace, Ennis, he was beaten in two trial stake finals last season in Thurles and Borris-in-Ossory.
One of the buckles of the day should be that between Lone Boxer and Dougal Town. Quoted at 2/1, Lone Boxer won a trial stake in Listowel and the Harry Findlay and Denis Cahsman-owned DougalTown (4/1 for Liscannor) reached the last eight in the Irish Cup when beaten by Kerry Call. On the boards at 10/1 will be Peggy’s Laden and Upsetter, both of whom were successful in their trial stakes in Liscannor in the past two seasons. Another to be reckoned with is the John O’Donoghue-owned and Gerry Holian-trained Ahanagran Snow.
Among the low odds for the all-age bitch stake will be John Joe Carey’s Bejo Blonde, a winner at Liscannior last year; Whitesone Rover, an all-age winner in Ballyheigue; Rhuta Bridge, beaten in the regional final; Looks Who’s Unique, the Cooraclare Cup winner, and the Killimer-owned Scattery Express.
With full cards for the Derby and Oaks Trial Stakes, supplemented with one course and two course duffer stake as well as the local stake, there should be plenty of excitement and action at the popular Moher venue over the weekend when old acquaintances will be renewed.
