Late goal secures points for Cratloe

Cratloe Forest  1   Shannon Olympic A  0
SHANNON Olympic A suffered their first league defeat of the season against Cratloe Forest in Limerick Institute of Technology on Sunday morning. Despite enjoying more possession, Olympic were left ruing their poor finishing when Cratloe converted one chance late in the game.

Olympic started the game on top, putting pressure on the home side from the off with Jason Regan, Karl Scott, George Justice and Donncadh Kelly all having chances to score early in the game.
Their best chances in the first half came from a Donncadh Kelly header, which went over the bar after 25 minutes and a Jason Regan effort in the 40th minute.
Cratloe created few scoring chances in the first half but when they did, they were as profligate as the Shannon men in their finishing. Their best chance came on 40 minutes when Ally McMillan failed to convert. This was the last significant incident of the first half and the teams went into the break with honours even at 0-0.
The second half started with Olympic again on top and creating more chances. A Gareth McPhillips free kick in the 47th minute went over the bar and Ray Quigley shot tamely into the Cratloe ’keeper’s hands on 50 minutes. It looked only a matter of time for Olympic to score with Jason Regan, Ray Quigley and substitutes Alan Casey and Jimmy Houlihan all going close.
In the 70th minute, Olympic felt they should have been offered the chance to score from the penalty spot when Alan Casey seemed to have been fouled in the box by Padraig Chaplin and ’keeper DeLoughery scooped the loose ball up. It was deemed a back pass by the referee and a yellow card was issued to DeLoughery. Olympic were awarded an indirect free kick from 13 yards but captain Regan was unable to keep his shot down.
Cratloe again failed to create many chances in this half but with Olympic failing to finish and capitalise on their chances, a sucker punch began to look likely and so it was in the 85th minute when a hopeful ball into the Olympic penalty area was not dealt with properly by the defence. It fell to Cratloe substitute David Ryan on the edge of the box, who calmly stroked the ball home past McGettrick in the Olympic goal.
Olympic looked shell-shocked and tried to get back to parity with Jimmy Houlihan almost getting free of the Cratloe defence a number of times. But it was too little too late and Cratloe Forest collected the three points.
Best for Olympic on the day were Donncadh Kelly and Karl Fogarty, while Pa O’Halloran and ’keeper Pierce DeLoughery were best for Cratloe.
