ENNIS Town Councillor Mary Howard has declared war on those who are responsible for the illegal dumping of rubbish in the town.
Councillor Howard has condemned the illegal dumping which has taken place in the laneway off Cook’s Lane on O’Connell Street.
“Having received complaints from residents and businesses about a recent increase in illegal dumping in this laneway off O’Connell Street, I have tabled a motion for next week’s meeting of the town council. We need to establish who is responsible for cleaning up this laneway, so that an immediate clean-up can be organised.
“The problems caused by illegal dumping are obvious, it is unsightly but it also poses a health risk. This laneway off Cook’s Lane is being used as a dumping ground and it needs to be tackled. Everything from bottles, cans, nappies, plastic bags, car tyres, scrap metal, wood, bags of domestic rubbish, shopping trolleys and a luggage trolley has been dumped here,” she said.
“Over the past number of years, the Ennis Tidy Towns Committee has done tremendous work in making our town and its environs a cleaner and safer place for all who live here. It is unacceptable that this work is being undermined by the reckless actions of a few.
“We need to work together to stamp out this illegal dumping. Every year, the town council has to spend scarce resources clearing up rubbish, money, that could be better spent elsewhere and this illegal dumping must be stamped out,” Councillor Howard added.
