High scoring in Gort hampers competition


IN the Christmas hamper men’s singles Stableford competition at Gort at the weekend, David McAllan was the winner with 43 points from Robin Lahiffe with a similar score. John Fordham was third with 42 points, while John Green won the gross with 35 points.
Last week’s open singles was won by Frank Conway (Kilrush) with 39 points from Sean Hanbury with 38. Willie McNamara scored a hole-in-one at the fifth.
There will be a men’s singles this weekend.
In the ladies’ mini-Christmas voucher competition, Ann Jordan was the winner with 26 points from Josie Cummins on 25 and Margaret Whealan on 24. 
There will be another mini-hampers competition this weekend over 13 holes.

Lahinch

LAST week’s ladies’ singles competition at Lahinch was won by Kitty Morris (12) with 37 points from Mona Davis (21) with 36 points and Bridget Hoey (18) with 36 points.
In the ladies’ turkey singles v par competition on Saturday on the old course, Eileen Hanrahan (2) was the winner with five-up from Gráinne Hennessy (16) with two-up and Edwina O’Brien (20) with one-up.
In the men’s monthly stroke competition on Saturday, Paul O’Brien (6) was the winner with 66 nett from Eugene Hyland (14) with 67 and Ronan Cooney (3) with 69. Noel Pyne won the gross with 70.
The winners of the men’s turkey fourball on Sunday were Paul O’Brien (5) and Bernard Whelan (7) with 46 points from Denis Creedon (7) and Matthew Griffin (13) with 44 points.
In the mixed hampers competition, the winners were Michael Hennessy (6) and Jean Basheer (17) with 41 points from Michael (12) and Suzanne Cagney (28) with 40 points.

Spanish Point

THE senior open each Tuesday and the open day each Friday continue to be well supported at Spanish Point. Last week, Len Wilson (15)
held off Tony Crowley (18) on the back nine with both shooting 34 points. Playing very consistently for the past few weeks, Willie McNamara (15), with a score of 35 points, was the winner on Tuesday from Gerry Meade (16) also on 35 points.
In the Friday competition, Tom Hehir (7) Woodstock was the winner with 34 points. Last weekend, the turkey competition was played as a team of three/four in a modified scramble format and, with a great score of 77 points, the winners were Liam Ryan (14), Gareth Ryan (20), Gerry McMahon (19) and Jim Marrinan (17).
This weekend, the format will be a Scotch Foursomes while the winter classic continues with the timesheets available in the clubhouse.

Ennis

ENNIS seniors had to postpone last week’s competition due to the inclement weather. The annual general meeting takes place in the clubhouse this Thursday afternoon at 4.30pm. Next week sees the Christmas hampers singles competition with a manual timesheet in operation beginning at 10am.

Dromoland

IN the weekend turkey competition at Dromoland, the winner was Kieran Newman with 42 points from Tom Bennett with 39 points and Pat McGrath, also with 39 points. Gay O’Gara won the 18 and over handicap section with 36 points, while the winner of the junior section was Sean Shanahan with 41 points.
There will be a turkey singles Stableford competition this weekend with re-entry allowed.
Mass for deceased members will take place this Friday at 8pm.

Woodstock

THERE was a good turnout for the turkey competition at Woodstock at the weekend. Cathal Nagle (10) won category A (0-12) with 42 points, while category B (13-16) was won by Tommy Flynn (16) with 44 points. Shane Collins (19) won category C (17and over) with 50 points. 
Next weekend’s competition is the turkey singles.

Doonbeg

MICHAEL Bermingham was the winner of the singles at Doonbeg on November 6 with 40 points from Liam Hayes on 37 and Tom O’Dea on 36.
Last Sunday’s singles was won by Declan Conway with 43 points from Seamus Griffin who had a similar score and Pat O’Malley with 41 points.
The next singles competition will be on December 17.
The singles matchplay is at the semi-final stage and should be complete by first week in December.

Shannon

FINTAN Ward (8) was the winner of the men’s 15-hole singles at Shannon last Wednesday with 37 points from Hugh Heaney (13) with 36 points.
In the ladies’ 12-hole turkey competition, Jean Murphy-Wright was the winner with 27 points from Joan Hoctor (36) with 26 points and Maura Mulcahy (20) with 26 points.

East Clare

IN the men’s singles at East Clare at the weekend, the winner was Paul Micks (15) with 44 points from Shane Chaplin (11) with 42 points and Paul Hayes (11) with 41 points.
The winner of the ladies’ 14-hole competition was Barbara Lynch from Catherine Murphy and Siobhán Shanahan.
In the men’s seniors’ outing to Lahinch, the winners were Oliver Quigney, Bill and Richard Cullen from Finbarr Ryan, Jim Nagle and Willie Roche.
With third spot was filled by Tony McNulty, Jack Manly and Paddy O’Connor.
The ladies’ seniors outing was won by Sue Casey, Breeda Reid and Mary Joe Minogue from Mary Hogan, Joan Kinsella and Pat Williams. The mixed nine-hole continues for November.
There will be another turkey singles this weekend
Mass for deceased members is on in the clubhouse on Monday at 7pm.

Portumna

THE ladies’ and gents’ Christmas hampers was played for over the weekend. In the 0-10 category, Basil Kennedy (8) won with 36 points. The 11- 14 category was won by Tom Moloney (14) with 36 points, the 15-18 category by Mick Molloy with 41 points, the 19 and over section by John Hynes (19) with 36 points. In the seniors’ section, John Kennedy (15) won with 35 points.
In the ladies’ section, the winner was Kathleen Lynch with 33 points from Anita Carey with 32 and Pauline McEvoy with 31. Kathleen Lynch won the ladies’ golfer-of-the-year title.
The club will host a Texas Hold’em Poker game on Sunday, December 4, at 5pm in the clubhouse.

Clare teachers

GORT was the venue for an outing for the Clare Teachers’ Society last week when Seamus Frehill was the winner with 39 points from Jim McMahon on 36 and Michael Kilmartin on 35. The category winners were Joe Brady with 34 pints, Peter Quinn with 35 points and Mary Hogan with 33 points, while the nines were won by Joe Griffin with 17 points and John Doyle with 18 points.
The society’s next outing will be on Saturday December 10 to Ennis when the tee will be available from 10am to 11am.

Éire Óg

THE Castle course in Lahinch was the venue for an outing for the Éire Óg Society on Sunday when the winner was Flan Glynn with 41 points from Ollie O’Loughlin on 40, Colm Fitzgerald on 39, John K Considine on 38, Mike Murphy on 38, Tony Roche on 38 and Paudie Guerin on 38.
Members extended congratulations to the society’s handicap secretary, Des Neylon who, on the previous evening, was named as the new vice captain at Ennis Golf Club.

Clarecastle

CLARECASTLE Golf Society will hold its Christmas hamper outing at Spanish Point this Saturday. Tee slots are available from 8.50am to 9.20am and 9.30am to 10am. Those wishing to play should text 086 3246015 their preferred slot time. Members and guests will be notified of their tee times following a draw for playing partners on Friday evening.

Pitch and putt

TOMMY Kelly was the winner of the stroke play competition at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday. PJ Considine was in second place while Billy Griffin won the gross.
The club outing will take place on this Sunday to Mellows in Galway. Members will depart from the club at 9am.
