THE board of management and parents’ council of Scariff Community College have organised a seminar to inform the public about headshops and their products.
The event, which is entitled The Rise of the Headshop Phenomenon in Ireland, will include speakers Rionach Power of the Mid-West Regional Task Force, Anne O’Neill of the Community Drug and Alcohol Service, HSE and Detective Garda Seamus McMahon of the Clare Garda Drugs Unit. The seminar will be held at the community college in Scariff on Wednesday from 8pm to 9.30pm.
The meeting comes in a week when Minister for Health, Mary Harney announced new measures ro criminalise the sale of legal highs
Parents’ council chairperson Regine Roskam said there is “genuine concern in the area” and she outlined that this meeting is being put forward to raise awareness and educate the public on the headshop phenomenon.
The idea would be that people would recognise what a headshop drug is and what its stated effects are.
Chairman of the board of management, Pat Hayes, said that parents were concerned that they didn’t know what drugs were and needed to be educated on availability of headshop products, what they are, their effects and how to deal with it.
“We felt it was important to have an information meeting so that people would be made fully aware of the concerns of the issues and health scares and dangers of taking them. The reality in East Clare is that people travel into Galway, Limerick and Ennis. It’s not a big publicity stunt, it is educational and there is also a need to talk about illegal drugs, as parents wouldn’t recognise what they are. So we hope that we might be touching on those issues as well. I hope that as many people as possible would take the opportunity to be briefed on these issues. Everyone can say ‘my kids wouldn’t ever do that’ but people can be pressurised and it’s important that people are fully aware,” he outlined.
All are welcome to attend.
