Green beats McDonagh for the South

The 109th South of Ireland golf championship concluded at Lahinch on Wednesday evening with Carlow’s John Green joining a list of winners that includes many of the greats of Irish golf including such as Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowall and Paul McGinley.

In the final he recorded a two and one win over Athlone’s Kelan McDonagh to bring to a conclusion to the championship.
Pat Murray’s dream of winning competition died at the semi-final stage for the seventh time at Lahinch on Wednesday morning.
Competing in the semi-final for the second successive year, he was comprehensively beaten by John Green from Carlow who emerged a five and four winner.
The other semi-final was a much tighter affair and, in fact, it went to the 20th before McDonagh defeated Cian Daly from Castletroy.
The results mean that, for the second year in succession, hopes of an all-Limerick final were dashed.
Lahinch member Thomas Neenan was the last of the Clare club representatives standing in this season’s championship. He eventually went out on Tuesday evening, going down to Pat Murray in the last of the quarter-finals.
Neenan played some great golf on the way to the last eight. He defeated Joe McCarthy on Saturday and followed with victory over David Kernohan on Sunday. On Monday morning he accounted for Michael Buggy and later in the afternoon he overcame the challenge of Tim O’Mahony from Mallow. His winning run continued on Tuesday morning when he overcame Richard O’Donovan from Lucan but he came up against a bang in form Pat Murray in the afternoon and the Limerick clubman who will play in the Irish open in Killarney this weekend won a six and four victory.
Sam Devey from Skerries, a first round winner over Noel Pyne from Ennis, went out at the same stage as Neenan losing to John Greene from Carlow.
Pyne played in his 48th consecutive South championship having been called up to play last Wednesday. He was originally listed as reserve number three when the draw was made, the cut off coming at 1.5
The first Clare man into action in this year’s championship was Lahinch man Declan McInerney who defeated Colum Kenny from the Curragh and UCD. He won again on Sunday beating Brendan Walton from the Island but he lost out in round three.
Bob Loftus from Ennis lost out on Saturday morning to American Tyler Morris but his brother, Stephen, was victorious in his first outing on Sunday. He also won on Monday morning in round three before going out to Kelan McDonagh in round four that evening.
David Fitzgerald (Dromoland) played on Saturday but lost out to Richard Knightley of Royal Dublin.
Shannon’s Paul O’Neill, playing in the championship; for the second successive year, went down to Michael McGinley in Saturday’s opening round.
At a function in Lahinch clubhouse on Tuesday night, hosted by the Munster branch, a special presentation was made to Mick Burns from Tramore, winner of the title in 1980.
