Grandparent of the year award for Ann

A NORTH Clare woman was named the winner of the county’s 2011 Grandparent of the Year competition. Ann Droney from Lisdoonvarna was nominated by her 10-year-old grandchild, David Droney.
National Grandparents Day, held on the last Sunday of September each year, encourages all grandchildren across Ireland to visit their grandparents and say thank you for all the love and support they have given over the years.
According to David, his nana is a very special person and a well-deserved winner of the best grandparent in Clare accolade.
“My Nana and Granddad live on a farm in Lisdoonvarna and I want to be a farmer when I grow up. Since I was born, my Dad has taken me to the farm every Saturday. My Nana plays tractors with me and tells me all about the farm and how things work. We have great fun together and I love her and Granddad so much. My Nana has a very sore back and can’t play on the floor with me anymore but she uses her stick to move the tractors around now,” he explained.
A special Sunday stroll was held in St Stephen’s Green at the weekend between midday and 4pm where grandparents and their families were invited to come along and join in the festivities. The competition was organised by Cadbury Roses and Friends of the Elderly and Pauline O’Regan from Cork, nominated by her 10-year-old grandchild Emelia Deane from Maynooth, was announced as the overall winner.
Commenting at the announcement, Shane Guest, Kraft Foods Ireland, said, “It’s wonderful to see the great relationship between grandparents and their grandchildren. We hope this competition encourages grandchildren, young and old all over Ireland to spend more time with their grandparents. We are delighted to be involved again this year with Friends of the Elderly, who promote such a worthy cause.”
The competition attracted huge interest from all over the country, with hundreds of heartwarming entries illustrating just how special Irish grandparents are.
Speaking on the winners’ announcement, Dermot Kirwan, Friends of the Elderly, said, “We are delighted to announce the county winners of the 2011 Grandparents of the Year Awards. We received hundreds of nominations highlighting the great relationships all over Ireland between grandparents and grandchildren.”
Ann Droney was awarded a hamper and a voucher courtesy of the Irish Professional Photographers Association.
