Golden wins president’s prize at Doonbeg

The president’s (Michael Bermingham) prize was played for at Doonbeg Links on Sunday and was won by Kieran Golden with 39 points. He had one to spare from Pat O’Malley with John McGuire in third spot, also with 39 points while James Griffin was next with 35 points.
The nines were won by Kevin Hayes and Vivian Killeen while Timmy Killeen won the gross.  Other prizewinners were Stephen O’Mahony (longest drive), Declan Conway (nearest the pin) and Noel Ferry from Ballybofey and Stranorlar Golf Club in Donegal, who won the guest’s prize.
The presentation was held in Darby’s Bar and was followed by entertainment provided by Liam Breen and his band.

Kilrush

Conor Egan (13) was the winner of the Paddy Ryan open singles at Kilrush on Sunday with an impressive 41 points. He had two to spare over David Egan (13) with Paddy O’Shea (22) a point further back in third spot.
In last week’s ladies’ competition, Kathleen O’Brien was the winner with 36 points from Deborah Glynn on 34 with Annie Gallagher next on 33 points.
The category winners were Anne Brennan with 33 points, Geraldine Burke with 32 points and Ursula Lineen with 32 points.
There will be an open 18-hole singles this Sunday while there will also be a quadrangular match in Lahinch, with tee times available from 12.10pm to 1.40pm. The club will host a race night this Friday at 9.30pm in aid of course development work.
In the men’s seniors three-ball modified team of three last Wednesday, the winners were TJ Lyons, Pat Shannon and Bill Murphy with 65 points from Tom Coffey, Mike Hemmings and John Robinson with 62 points. 
In third spot with 61 points were Jim McSwiggan, PW Glynn and CP Walsh with 61 points.
Each Tuesday evening for the month of April at 6pm, members of the public are invited to visit the club and try their hand at golf.
This invitation is open to those who have never tried the game before but would like to give it a go. There will be no charge and members of the committee will be there to help. Clubs and balls will be supplied.

Shannon
The ladies’ competition at Shannon last week was a fourball, which saw Niamh O’Callaghan and Sandra McNamara victorious with 42 points. In second place were Pauline Kilmartin and Sheila Treacy with 39 points.
The Wednesday men’s open singles competition saw Vincent Hodge capture the spoils with 42 points. Vincent turned with 21 points, which included birdies at the fifth and eighth  holes. An inward back nine of level par, which also yielded 21 points, included birdies at the 14th and 18th holes. In second place with 41 points was John Paul Meaney, who edged out Mike O’Callaghan courtesy of a better back nine.
The gross was captured by Paul O’Neill, who returned an excellent four-under par 68 for 40 points. Paul’s only concession to par came at the 15th which was offset by five birdies at the fifth, ninth, 13th, 17th and 18th.
The men’s competition at the weekend was the April medal and head greenkeeper Pat O’Rourke won his first major when he just edged out Jim McNamara by virtue of a better back nine, both returning 66 nett.
Pat recovered from a shaky start, which saw him five over par after three holes, to cover the remaining six holes of his front nine in two over.
A steady back nine of six over was sufficient for victory. Runner-up Jim McNamara was deprived of a unique double, having previously won the March medal. He is setting a hot pace for golfer of the year competition. Declan Coyne was third with 67 nett, just edging out Dermot Finnan courtesy of a better back six. The gross was won by Paul O’Neill with a level par 72.
The senior scratch cup will be played for this Sunday when there will be a shotgun start.
On the social scene, the club’s fashion show takes place this Friday, commencing at 8pm.

Lahinch

Liam McDonnell (5) was the winner of the men’s singles stroke monthly medal competition at Lahinch on Saturday with 68. He won by a stroke from David Sheedy (7) with Stephen Hennessy (5) a further shot back in third spot.
In the men’s fourball v par competition on Sunday, Darragh (11) and Fergal (12) MacDermott were the winners with three up from Pádraig Hayes (10) and Murt McMahon (8).
The ladies’ April medal stroke competition on Monday was won by Eileen Curley (18) with 74 nett from Jenny Cagney (14) with 76 and Suzanne Cagney (33) with 78. Olivia Hayes (6) won the gross with 83.

Ennis

Kitty Morris was the winner of the ladies’ 18-hole singles competition at Ennis from Cora Kerins, with Maura Ryan in third spot. Della Burns won the gross.
The winners of the senior ladies’ competition with 57 points were Ann Daly, Phil Butler and Carmel Verling. In second place were Kathleen Frehill, Mary Glynn and Kate O’Ceallaigh.
In the Friday open singles, Roy Duggan won with 38 points from Eamonn McGrath, who had a similar score. Ross Darmody was third and he also returned 38 points while Joseph Griffin was fourth with 36 points. Brendan O’Flaherty won the gross with 31 points.
The winner of the April monthly medal was Gerard Hartnett with 68 nett.
In the team of four in aid of St Vincent De Paul on Sunday, the winners with 120 points were Jason Woods, Noel and Andrew Whelan and Paschal Phelan. In second place with 117 points were John Keane, Tom Woulfe, Pat Rutherford, and Cathal O’Neill.

Spanish Point

The Friday open day continues to be well supported at Spanish Point and last week the winner was David Fitzgerald (15) with 36 points. In second place was Gerry Meade (16) also shooting 36 points.
Over the weekend the first of this season’s golfer of the year competitions took place and there was a very big entry, with vice-captain Noel McMahon (19) running into good form and scoring 40 points to finish in first place.
In second place was John O’Brien (15) with 38 points followed by Bernie O’Halloran (20), also with 38 points, while fourth spot was filled by Noel Connellan (15) with a similar score. 
This Friday evening will see the re-introduction of the popular nine-hole team event, which is open and the weekly open day will now move to Thursday.
This weekend is the annual quadrangular outing on the Castle Course in Lahinch and the timesheet is available in the Spanish Point clubhouse.
The Munster Country Club’s team received a walkover last Saturday as Listowel Golf Club failed to send a team and the next match is on Saturday in Castlerosse Golf Club, Killarney, against Doneraile Golf Club.
Team managers Noel McMahon and Eoghan O’Loughlin were disappointed with the no-show as their panel had prepared well and the members for that match were Brian O’Loughlin, Thomas Dormer, Mervin Hehir, Michael O’Brien, Fergal Hehir, David Keane, Conor Egan, Michael Talty, Cathal Whelan and Thomas Hehir.

Woodstock

Teresa Sherlock won the ladies’ 18-hole singles competition at Woodstock last week with 32 points from Liz Dinan on 30 points. There will be a similar competition this Sunday, with the draw at 11.50am.
Meanwhile, Adrian Coleman (15) won the men’s singles competition with 44 points from Frankie Vaughan (19) with 42 points with Pat Keane (11) in third spot with 42 points.
The April medal will be played for this weekend.
Meanwhile, the teams, led by George Smith and Adrian Kearney, have qualified for the winter league final.

Gort

Alan Minogue was the winner of the men’s singles competition at Gort at the weekend with 39 points from John Kelleher and Gerry Kennedy also on 39 points. Gerry Donaldson was third with 37 points. Jason McLynn won the gross with 35 points.
The open singles on Monday of last week was won by Noel Forde with 40 points from Ian McLynn on 37 points.
This weekend, the men will play for the Bob Forde Trophy while the open singles will continue on Monday. The ladies’ Easter challenge will take place this Sunday.

Dromoland

Frank McNamara was the winner of the singles v par competition at Dromoland with four up from Noel Stapleton with three up and Mark Hogan with two up. Philip Naughton, with one up, won the category for over-18 handicaps while the junior winner was Sean Shanahan with six up. There will be a club foursomes this weekend.
In the ladies’ bumper medal stroke competition, the winner was Colette Colleran from Sandy Smyth with Ann Nix in third spot followed by Julie Fitzgerald.  The winner of the nine-hole summer competition was Ber McDermott from Katrina O’Neill.

Portumna

In the men’s 18-hole singles Stableford PGA tankard competition at Portumna at the weekend, the winner was Shane Duffy (21) with 41 points from Dan Hogan (12) with a similar score. Seamus Cawley (16) was third with 40 points while Sean Robinson (6) won the gross with 32 points.
In the ladies’ PGA tankard competition, the winner with 37 points was Sally O’Connell from Kathleen Lynch with 36 points and Loretto O’Grady with 34 points.
In the Monday open last week, father and son featured strongly. The winner of the competition was James J McLoughlin (9) with 39 points  from James Patrick McLoughlin (2) with 38 points. John Cleary (5) was third with 37 points while Sean Cleary (3) won the gross with 35 points.
Both Suzanne Corcoran and Ann Cassidy have been informed that both are on the Connacht Ladies’ inter-provincial team. They will tee off in Royal County Down on Wednesday, April 26 to Friday 29 April.

Kilkee

In week six of the Spring League at Kilkee, the winner was Noel Roche (12) with 35 points while the winning team comprised D O’Flynn (9), N. Roche (12), P Powell (14), J Keane (18), M Morrissey (21) and N Gaffney (24), who returned 123 points.

East Clare

Teddy (12) and Michael (18) were the winners of the men’s foursomes at East Clare on Sunday with a sore of 66 nett. In second place were Mike McInerney (14) and Donal Cooney (16) with 67.
In the men’s seniors outing, John Farrell and Noel Enright were the winners from Batt Skehan and Jackie McHugh, with third spot filled by Michael Gough and JJ Barton.
In the ladies’ golfer of the year competition, Sue Casey won with 62 nett from Mairéad Twomey on 69. The category winners were Eileen Donnellan on 70 nett, Catherine Minogue on 71 and Brigid Minogue on 70.
Brigid Minogue won the ladies’ seniors outing from Bess Fennessy and Breda O’Loughlin.
This weekend, the ladies will have a team-of-two competition while the men will have an 18-hole stroke golfer of the year outing.

Ennis Seniors

Eighty members played in last week’s three ball modified scramble for Ennis seniors and the winners with 74 points were John White, John Joe Coyne and Sean O’Gorman.
They had one to spare over Frank Landy, Luke Coote and Conor Murphy. In third spot with 71 points were Ned Ryan, PJ Garry and Brian Higgins followed by Brian Warner, Pat Cahill and Paul Mockler, who also scored 71 points.
In fifth place with 70 points were Michael Cummins, Noel Pilkington and Pádraig Ryan followed by John Keane, Maurice Walshe and Denis O’Ceallaigh, who had a similar score.
Johnny Cullinan, John Guilfoyle and Sean Fitzpatrick also returned 70 points to fill seventh place.

Clare Teachers

Shannon Golf Club will be the venue this Saturday for the next outing for members of the Clare Teachers’ Society. The tee for this 18-hole singles competition will be available from 2pm to 3.15pm and a timesheet is available from Joan at 086 3167365.

O’Callaghan’s Mills GAA

O’Callaghan’s Mills GAA Club will hold their annual golf classic at East Clare Golf Club on Good Friday, April 22, and Easter Saturday, April 23, to help generate funds for the daily running of the club and for ongoing development work.
A timesheet is in operation and a timesheet may be booked by contacting Pat Loughnane (086 2668069) or any of the organising committee members: Joe Cooney, Eamon Cooney, Matt Donovan, Mike McInerney, Kevin Frost, Pat Loughnane, Donal Fleming, Joe Meaney and Neil O’Brien.

Clarecastle

Jason Considine was the winner of the Clarecastle Society’s recent outing at Gort.
Peter Cosgrove was second with Paschal Russell third. The nines were won by Tom Coughlan and PJ Garry. Noel Barry was the winner of the guests’ section. The next outing is to Ennis on May 30.

Sean T Society

The Sean T Society resumed its outings last Saturday in Castletroy when Cian O’Brien was the overall winner with 36 points.
The category winners were  Conor Moroney, Andrew Moloney and John Doyle. Other prize winners on the day were Owen Kelleher and  David O’Mahony. The next outing will be on May 21 to Portumna

Corofin Society

The April outing of the Corofin Society will take place at Loughrea this Saturday. The tee is reserved from 10am and it is expected that between 30 and 40 members will take part in what is one of the Golfer of the Year events.

Sixmilebridge camogie
East Clare will be the venue for a golf classic in aid of Sixmilebridge camogie on May 27 and 28.
The competition is for a team of four and entries can be given to Linday at 087 9907405 or Breda at 086 0750778.

Pitch and Putt
Tommy Kelly was the winner of the Bob Canty Trophy at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday. PJ Considine was second with Gareth Kerin in third spot. Kenneth Kerin won the gross.
There will be Clare team trials at the Clare Road on Thursday, April 21 at 6.30pm.
