Golden Gloves win for Malone

THERE was great success for the Tuamgraney Handball Club over the weekend at the annual Golden Gloves 40×20 tournament in Belfast.
Hosted by the St Paul’s Club, the Golden Gloves is one of the country’s biggest and most prestigious handball tournaments, drawing the cream of Ireland’s handballers. Tuamgraney’s Niall Malone secured the men’s A singles title when he overcame Mayo’s Ciaran Burke 21-12, 21-14 in the final, having played some exceptional handball in the earlier rounds, including an impressive win over local man Paddy Crothers. This was a huge win for Malone and bodes well for the coming small alley season.
Diarmaid Nash added to Tuamgraney’s haul by teaming up with Joe McCann (Mayo) to take the men’s open doubles title, beating Padraig McGlinchey and Vinny Moran in the final. Nash also competed in the open singles, exiting to Mayo man Dessie Keegan in a tie-breaker (11-9).
Bary Nash also had a great tournament, going all the way to the 15-and-under singles final, where he was eventually undone by Darren Doherty (Monaghan) on a 12-21, 19-21 score.
Meanwhile, the Irish Junior Nationals kick off with the qualifier rounds this weekend and again Tuamgraney will be well represented. Patrick Fitzgerald, Michael Barrett, Dale Harrington, Willie Fitzgerald and Martin Cunningham are all in 15-and-under qualifier round action, while six other Tuamgraney players, boys and girls, have byes into the first round proper.
Tuamgraney Handball Club will be hosting a fundraising poker classic on Friday, December 3 in Hassett’s Lounge, Tuamgraney.
