Garda injured in Ennis incident

Gardaí are on the hunt for two men believed to have been involved in a road traffic incident where a garda was struck and had his leg rolled over by a grey Honda Civic in Ennis town centre on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred at 2.20pm when two gardaí observed a car
come out of Francis Street and failed to take the turn onto Abbey Street and then hit a pole on the far side of the road. It then reversed, hitting the car behind it.
Inspector Tom Kennedy told The Clare Champion that on seeing this car hitting the pole two gardaí, a male and female, who were on foot patrol nearby intervened to stop the car.
“The car bolted from the scene and in the process the male garda got hit by the car when it reversed back, knocking him to the ground and a wheel was driven over his leg,” he explained.
The injured garda was admitted to hospital and following treatment he was released at around 6.30pm on Tuesday evening. He is thought not to have sustained any fractures although it is understood further medical treatment was to be sought on Wednesday.
After striking the garda the car “sped off” through Abbey Street car park, up onto Bank Place and thereafter gardaí are not sure where it went.
Ten minutes after this last sighting, gardaí did get a report of a car on fire at Kilbricken, Doora, on a narrow slip road that links to the motorway and gardaí believe this was the same car that was involved in the incident at Abbey Street.
“The car was a grey Honda Civic, which had a black bonnet and alloy wheels. The car had license plates with either 98 G or 98 C at that time and these were false plates. This car was stolen from County Limerick on June 30. There were two males in the car and we are seeking witnesses to establish better descriptions of them,” Inspector Kennedy explained.
