CLARE Intercultural Network is seeking expressions of interest in taking part in a futsal league beginning later this summer.
“Futsal is a kind of indoor football, played with a special ball which doesn’t bounce. It is quite new here in general in Ireland and especially here in Ennis. The ball doesn’t bounce so people can develop their football skills more. It is very popular in Brazil and South America, they start playing it when they are young and it makes them better players,” explained Alphonse Basogomba from the network.
The Clare Intercultural Network Futsal Tournament, held in conjunction with the FAI, attracted six teams and finished on Wednesday.
“The tournament began in early April. It involved six teams made up of people from all different backgrounds, cultures and countries. That was very successful. We did it because we wanted to introduce futsal to the area and see if people wanted to take part in a league,” Alphonse outlined.
“We want people to get in touch if they would like to get involved because first we are going to have a Clare Intercultural League.
Then we have to link it to the Munster League and then the National League,” he added.
“The champions of the Clare Intercultural League will go on to play in the Munster League and if they are successful then will continue to the National League,” Alphonse continued.
The Clare Intercultural Network is currently looking for a venue for the league.
While six teams have signed up to play and three have expressed interest in taking part, organisers are eager to get even more teams involved.
“We want this to be a community league and we need people to be part of the organising committee and to help shape the league. The league is not about winning but if you would like to participate, you are welcome. Teams are made up of eight players, five playing and three subs. If someone doesn’t have a team, we can help people set up teams. This is not a business, we want people to interact and get to know each other and have fun,” Alphonse concluded.
