‘Fur coat’ needed in Kilkee houses

KILKEE town councillor Claire Haugh has said that some residents of the four social houses in the town, which remain under town council control, need to wear heavy coats to remain warm while indoors, during the winter months.

“They are absolutely freezing. I’ve been in many of the houses during the winter. I called to one of them last year. They had a big coal fire down and you’d get scalded but go out into the hall, up the stairs and you’d need a fur coat, it was so bad. It was very, very cold,” Councillor Haugh said.

She made her comments while supporting a motion from town mayor Paddy Collins at Monday’s monthly meeting of the town council. He asked that Minister of State Jan O’Sullivan give special consideration to the occupants of the four houses when dealing with Energy Efficiency Investment Grants.

“I got on to the minister’s office and the response I got back was that the department officials have met recently with housing officials with all the local authorities with the objective of getting the work started as quickly as possible.

“I’d be afraid the Kilkee Town Council houses will get lost in the pile and as we know, we’re going to be gone in 12 months time. We don’t have the budget to leave these houses in top nick so what I’m asking is that we send this motion to all the other town councils, especially those who were previously town commissioners because I’m sure they are in the same boat as ourselves,” Councillor Collins said.

“In 12 months time the cost of upgrading them to the standard of county council housing is probably going to cost 10-times more,” he warned.
