Some TLC called for former dump that is now lovely amenity

THE transformation of a former town dump in Ennis into a “little haven” for the community was praised as calls were made on the local authority to carry out regular maintenance in the area.

The “overgrown” walking trails at Fr McNamara Park were raised at a meeting of the Ennis Municipal District by Councillor Mary Howard. She stated that she regularly receives representations from the public regarding the amenity.

“Is it possible to put a regular programme of maintenance in place as it gets very overgrown and the weeds and briars have become trip hazards,” she asked.

Anthony Considine, executive engineer, replied, “Similar to 2020, maintainence works continue to take place to the walking trails around Fr. McNamara park. These works took place in mid November 2021 and again were completed outside of the bird nesting season which runs from March 1 to August 31 each year.”

Councillor Howard stated that there is “a little haven out there, but it gets overgrown so quickly” she said, making the case for more regular maintenance.

She said she is aware of restrictions on hedge cutting during nesting season, “but I am talking about cutting at ground level. You couldn’t bring a buggy in here. I’ve had people contact me with small toddlers who can’t let them run ahead in case they fall and get cut. Not a lot of people know about this place, but those that do, love it.”

Councillor Johnny Flynn seconded the motion saying, “I’m delighted to see the development of what was the old town dump.”
He pointed out that as well as the walking trails, it is also the location of the Ennis Men’s Shed.

“It’s fantastic to see this community use and I fully support a maintenance programme.”

Councillor Pat Daly gave the motion his backing saying, “It has come along way since the old dump. It has a world class camogie pitch, the men’s shed and state of the art walks. It’s a great asset to the town and it is important maintenance goes ahead as a regular occurrence.”

Also voicing support Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy stated that the council has been “very creative” in its approach to the environmentally sensitive site.
