Focus on New Quay exhibition

Readjust the Focus, Remember the Absence, is the new exhibition opening at the Russell Gallery in New Quay, Clare on Saturday, June 30, at 6pm.

This artistic project, which sees the coming together of three members of the Engelbrecht family, will be opened by well known potter, Michael Roche and runs for the month of July at the North Clare gallery.
The exhibition, featuring works by Musa, Safia and Zulaikha, draws on themes of memory, stillness and trace. Though stylistically very different, the work is imbued with a meditative quality echoing the process in which it was made and the ideas that fuelled the making.

The showcase features painting, photography, intaglio printing and drawing.

Based in Kinvara, Musa Engelbrecht continues his journey of remembering in a collection of oils and acrylics, capturing the healing calm of still moments and simple pleasures a vase of flowers, a collection of beautiful ceramics, coffee in the shade.

Meanwhile, Safia Engelbrecht-Waller is a multimedia artist with an interest in graphic design, interior design, textiles, photography and print. Currently, her practice is concerned with the trace and memory of human presence. In this collection titled I See You There she uses digital photography and photo-Intaglio etching prints to convey the absence of presence in familiar places.

Zulaikha is a visual artist and curator based in Galway and currently works at Galway Arts Centre. In her studio practice, she uses re-appropriated images, drawing, painting, photography and model-making to explore ideas of vitality, dynamism and the physical and metaphysical forces at play in the human body and psyche.

In her current body of work, re-appropriated images provide the starting point. Primarily portrait – based, the images are altered, re-adjusting the focus.

This show combines Musa’s superbly executed paintings in a more traditional and evocative manner with the more experimental and conceptual work of his two daughters Safia and Zulaikha.
