ENNIS Farmers’ Market is set to pitch up its stalls at Coláiste Muire next month for a very special fundraising effort.
Transition year students are hosting the  market at the school on April 24 from 7pm to 9pm in a bid to raise funds for the Simon Community.
The TY2 class have been busy working on a project exploring homelessness as part of Young Social Innovators since last September and the market in the coláiste is the latest in a range of fundraising and awareness-raising events for the students.
A number of regular stall holders from the market will not only be selling their wares at the school but they will also be sharing their expert advice.
There will be a cookery demonstration focusing on credit crunch cooking; natural cosmetics, a gardening clinic and also advice on ornamental gardens. There will also be a Fairtrade stall.
According to teacher Margaret Harrold, “There will be lots of free samples on the evening, with market bags made specially for the event. There will also be a raffle for hampers, with lots of products from the market. As well as giving you a chance to sample the fantastic produce of the market, there will also be an opportunity to get advice as well as raise money for a local charity.”
She explained that the farmers’ market has been involved in charity events in the past and Coláiste Muire was delighted when they were approached about getting involved with fundraising for Simon.
The students are very involved in promoting the event, as well as putting together information about all of the stall holders who will be involved.
“The transition year students have been doing their project on homelessness in collaboration with the Simon Community. Their project, as part of Young Social Innovators, is called Think Outside the Cardboard Box. For this fundraiser we wanted to keep it all local. It’s for a local charity, we are a local school and the market is local. The TY2s have already hosted a cash-for-clobber event, which raised €1,000 and a school sleepover, which raised €850 for Clare Haven and on Thursday we will have the finals of Coláiste Muire’s Got Talent.
“But our big event will be the market and I would like to encourage as many people as possible to come along and support this. It will be a very enjoyable evening but also you will be helping raise money for Simon.”
All entry fee money is going towards Simon.
