Experienced journalist required

The Clare Champion is a family-owned newspaper and the paper of record for County Clare. It was founded in 1903 and since then, its journalists have since won numerous awards and continuously broken stories of local and national interest. Based in Ennis, the ‘Champion covers all of County Clare and South Galway.

A vacancy now exists in The Clare Champion for an experienced journalist to cover maternity leave.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will:

  • Break news stories for a Clare audience
  • Identify and develop stories of local interest
  • Work with the editor and other reporters to ensure The Clare Champion retains its position as the premier source of news in Clare and South Galway
  • Deliver original, accurate copy to tight deadlines
  • Demonstrate initiative and flexibility in delivering excellent news and feature articles

Experience covering sport and using social media would be an advantage.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will:

  • Have experience covering local authority meetings, courts and news
  • Have experience writing for multiple platforms
  • Have demonstrated excellent news values
  • Have a strong understanding of defamation law
  • Have demonstrated competency in shorthand
  • Have a thorough understanding of the workings of local and national government
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in the field of journalism
  • Have strong organisational skills and be able to work on multiple stories simultaneously
