Exhibition to recall horrors of war

AN illustrated talk by a Polish national on the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 will be one of the features of a Clare Museum exhibition, which will highlight how the experience of war impacted on the lives of ordinary people.

In advance of the exhibition in Ennis, the museum has issued an appeal for the loan of objects and documents relating to past wars that are linked to people resident in Clare.

In 2008, to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the ending of the Great War, the museum appealed for artefacts relating to Clare men who fought the Allied armies between 1914 and 1918.

A wide variety of artefacts were loaned to the museum and a very successful exhibition was mounted.
This time, the appeal has been broadened to include items relating to the Clare contribution not only to the Great War but to all wars and United Nations Peacekeeping operations. It is intended to place these artefacts, photographs or documents on display in time for Remembrance Day on November 11.

“It is not the purpose of the exhibition to glorify war but rather to tell the human story of Clare people and how the experience of war impacted their lives,” said John Rattigan, museum curator.
However, the exhibition is not just for the natives of Clare. In a departure from the previous appeal, an invitation is being extended to non-Irish residents of Clare – now part of the social fabric of the county – to make their contribution also.

Many immigrants from Eastern Europe, Africa and elsewhere come from countries that have experienced conflict and war. The Polish and Lithuanian communities are now the first and third largest immigrant groups in Ireland.

Both countries were involved in World War II and it is likely there are items in Clare that can tell a story that would be new to the native residents of the county. These would be welcome.

During the exhibition in November, there will be an illustrated talk by a Polish national on the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. The date for this talk will be announced later but it will serve as an opportunity for Irish people to find out a little about the history of Poland.

Anyone interested in contributing to the exhibition can contact the curator, John Rattigan at 065 6823382.
