THE Golden Vale Clare Community Games athletics finals were held on Sunday at a sunny Lees Road.
After a short parade, the opening ceremony was addressed by County Chairman Fiach McHugh and by the Mayor of Clare, Councillor Tony Mulcahy.
The Clare chairman congratulated all the children who participated in the area competitions while Councillor Mulcahy paid tribute to the volunteers for their efforts in promoting the games and for helping to give the children ‘a valuable outlet’.
The Community Games pledge was read in Irish by Rianat Sobayo and in English by Aaron Bradley. Jamie Roche of Ennis lit the Flame of Light, a task performed by his mother Marie (Gormley) some years ago. Jamie went on to win his event, again repeating history, as Marie won the same event for girls the year she lit the flame.
Doora-Barefield won the shield for the best mascot while the O’Sullivan family shield for the best turned out small area in the parade was won by Derg.
In the competition for the large areas, Newmarket were third and won the Meakins family shield. An Droichead were in second place and they won the Dan Donoghue shield while the winners were Cooraclare-Cree and they were presented with the Shannon Development Company shield.
Before the competition began, the crowd was led in the national anthem by Alex O’Neill and Ellie Rochford, members of the Quin-Clooney U-10 relay team.
After a busy day’s competition involving over 1800 children, more than 60 volunteers and numerous coaches, trainers, managers and family members, Ennis St John’s retained the Ulster Bank Cup for best area on the day.
There were many great contests and the various winners will go forward to the national finals in Athlone in August.
