Ennis senior captain drives-in to office

SIXTY-four members played in a modified fourball competition to coincide with the drive-in to office of Pat McGuire, the new captain of the Ennis Men’s Senior Social Group. The newly elected captain held his drive-in in front of a big attendance of members.
Conor Murphy and Brian Warner teamed up to win the competition with 47 points from Jim Scully and John White on 45 points. Third with 43 points were Luke Coote and George Dilger, one ahead of fourth-placed Pádraig Ryan and Paul Higgins who, in turn, were one ahead of Johnny Cullinan and Peadar Cosgrove.
Sixth, also with 41 points, were Bernie Hoey and Pat Cusack from Sean O’Gorman and Michael Kenny. Four pairings returned 40 points and they were John McLaughlin and Larry Parks, Noel Pyne and John Cullinan, Tim McAllister and Sean Fitzpatrick and Dick Herbert and Ollie Kennelly.

East Clare

TOM Larkin (20) was the winner of the men’s 14-hole singles competition at East Clare last week with 33 points. He won by one from John Sherry (12).
In the men’s seniors’ competition the winners were Charles Stuart, Tom Moloney and Tom Larkin, with second spot filled by John Doyle, John Fleming and Nick Ryan.
The winter league is continuing with a nine-hole re-entry throughout the month of January. The ladies are also running a nine-hole re-entry competition.

Woodstock
THE weekend’s 14-hole singles competition at Woodstock was won by Greg Donegan (13) with 32 points from Donal Brogan (14), who had a similar score. There will be a club singles Stableford competition this week.

Portumna
IN the men’s 15-hole competition at Portumna at the weekend Ger Madden (10) was the winner of the 0-10 category with 35 points. Other winners were Oliver Flanagan (13) with 35 points in the 11-14 category, Brian Grogan (16) with 40 points in the 15-18 category and Ollie Rooney (19) with 30 points in the 19 and over category. Dan Hogan (11) won the seniors section with 35 points.
Last week’s men’s 14-hole Stableford competition was won by Mike Fallow (19) with 33 points from Shane McHugo (5) with 32 points, with third spot filled by Graham Carty (15) with 32 points.
In the ladies’ 14-hole Stableford competition, Anita Carey was the winner with 28 points from Kathleen Lynch, who had a similar score. Loretto O’Grady was third with 26 points.
The captains and presidents for 2011 will drive-in to office on Sunday, February 6.

Shannon
LAST Wednesday’s men’s 15-hole singles competition at Shannon saw John Gubbins lead the field a merry dance when his 39 points left him with five to spare from Adam McMahon.
Next weekend sees the first round of the men’s Winter League.
In the ladies’ winter league, ladies are asked to place their names on the drawsheet in the ladies locker room. The draw will be posted on Tuesday next.
On the social scene, the 45 drive continues on Thursday evenings with the quiz on Friday evenings.

Dromoland

THE 18-hole singles Stableford competition at Dromoland was won by Tony Byrne with 39 points from Ray O’Neill on 36 and Hugh O’Neill on 35. Ryan O’Neill won the junior section with 33 points.

Spanish Point

WITH the weather relenting somewhat, the weekly seniors Tuesday open was well supported and the scoring reflected the improved conditions with recently qualified senior Brian O’Loughlin (10) shooting 38 points to win on count back from Len Wilson (16), also scoring 38 points. The competition at the weekend was affected due to incessant rain on Saturday but Sunday saw a big entry and the course was surprisingly dry. Scoring was close in the team of four modified rumble. With a good distribution of scoring from all four members, the team of Harry Crowe (17), Carl O’Neill (26), Martin Leyden (19) and former Clarecastle hurling stalwart, Christy Leyden (24) won with 76 points.
This weekend, members will play for the hampers, a competition which was cancelled during the recent bad weather, and a timesheet is in the clubhouse.
The seniors’ open day continues on Tuesdays.

Pitch and putt
AT the Clare Road pitch and putt club on Sunday, the Helen Cuddihy Memorial Trophy was won by by Gareth Kerin from PJ Considine, with Billy Griffin winning the gross.
