County board meeting to re-appoint McDermott

CLARE GAA delegates will be asked at the July meeting of the county board to ratify Micheál McDermott as senior football manager for another term.
Members of the board executive met with McDermott and his selection committee earlier this week following the team’s elimination from the football championship last Saturday in Tullamore.
The Cavan native has consented to allow his name go forward for the position for another term and this will be proposed to delegates at the July board meeting, which will take place on Tuesday, July 13.
Speaking after the team’s defeat after extra time, McDermott clearly indicated that he would find it difficult to say no if asked by the board to continue in the position.
He took the job on 12 months ago when he agreed to just one year. The team came close to winning promotion from Division 4 but, after six straight wins, lost their final two games to the Division 4 finalists, Limerick (winners) and Waterford. They also lost to Waterford in the Munster Senior Championship first round and then went out to Offaly in the qualifier last week.
Despite being disappointed with the end result last Saturday, McDermott was clearly pleased with Clare’s effort in the lead up to and during the game. Speaking to the players immediately after the game, he stressed that ‘a breakthrough isn’t far away” before adding that he was gutted for the players.
Speaking to The Clare Champion this week, McDermott confirmed that he has discussed staying on with Liam (McHale) and James (Foran) and they are prepared to continue. “We have made progress and there is unfinished business. We have sat down and talked about it and we have plans if the county board want us. An early decision would allow us to start putting those plans in place.
“We were so close this year. The post came between us and promotion in the game with Limerick. That’s how fine the line was between a successful and an unsuccessful year. Sport can be cruel at times and last Saturday showed that. People would say that we deserved to win but the scoreboard dictates,” he said.
