Cosgrove wins Ennis captain’s prize

Peter Cosgrove captured the captain’s (Mike Butler) prize at Ennis on Sunday, winning by a stroke from Noel Normoyle on 101.5, with Michael Neylon a further stroke back in third spot. They were followed by BA Considine with 104, Val Bredin with 104, John McCarthy with 106.5, Martin O’Neill with 107, Tony Molloy with 107, John Nevin with 107 and Gary Walsh with 107.5.
Pat Murphy won the gross with 73 from Noel Pyne on 75. John Fitzpatrick won category 1 with 71 nett, with Liam Behan winning category 2 with 67 and Fintan McEvoy winning category 3 with 67.
Kevin Boland was the leading qualifier with 68 while other prizewinners were Steve Burns with 110 nett (past captains) Johnny Cullinan with 108 (seniors) and Pat McCarthy (guests). The competition, played for over Saturday and Sunday, attracted a huge entry.
The winners of the captain’s fourball were Enda Heaney and Kieran Ryan with 43 points from Joe O’Brien and Tony Coote, who had a similar score. Walter O’Brien and Michael Connolly were in third spot with 41 points followed by John McGrath and Liam Barry with 41 points.
In the open singles on Friday, KT Toner from Woodstock was the winner with 40 points from Tony J McInerney on a similar score. Tommy Stack was third with 39 points followed by Alph Duggan. Brian Gilligan won the gross with 33 points.
The PV McInerney Memorial Day for seniors will be held on Thursday, June 16. This will be an 18-hole singles between Ennis and Ballinasloe, with the best 10 cards to count. A timesheet is in operation.
Reigning All-Ireland JB Carr champions, Ennis, will begin the defence of their title against Shannon at Shannon next Wednesday at 3pm.
In last Thursday’s modified scramble, Brian Warner, Eamon Corry and Joe O’Neill won with 80 points from John Vaughan, Sean O’Gorman and Michael Torpey on 75. In third spot were Tom Greene, Michael Connolly and Tim McAllister with 73 followed by Frank White, Luke Coote and Frank Coffey with 72. Fifth place was filled by Pat Cahill, TJ Kerins and Pat Mullins with 72 followed by Tony Blake, Michael Carmody and Conor Murphy with 72, Dick Herbert, Michael Ball and Tony Kehoe with 72, Ferdie O’Donoghue, John Cullinane and Jimmy Kearns with 71, Pat Diggin, Joe O’Brien and Bobby Burke with 71,  Andy Cregan, George Tuohy and Pat Rutherford with a similar score.
In the ladies’ section, the winners of the Peugeot Coronation Foursomes were Nuala Guinan and Carmel Cummins with 37 from Rita O’Brien and Yvonne Keohane, who had a similar score. 
In the ladies’ seniors last week, the winners were Nuala Guinan, Vera Byrne and Nuala D’Auria with 48 from Patricia O’Donnell, Eileen Corry and Emmanuel McMahon with 50. In third spot with 51 were Ann Casey, Josephine McMahon and Mary Leahy.

Shannon Chamber classic

Thirty-five teams have already signed up to play in Shannon Chamber’s annual golf classic, which takes place at Shannon on Thursday, June 16. The event has become chamber members’ annual opportunity to mingle and meet in a friendly but competitive environment.
Andrew Drysdale, general manager of tournament sponsors Park Inn by Radisson Shannon Airport, said, “As a member of Shannon Chamber, we are delighted to lend our support to an event which is growing in stature year on year. Having a golf course like Shannon on our doorstep is a fantastic additional attractor for our guests.”
Shannon Chamber’s chief executive Helen Downes is delighted at the level of support the Chamber has received. “It’s obvious from the numbers registered so far that people like to network in the less formal environment of the workplace,” she said.

Woodstock

The president’s (Jimmie Kelly) prize was played for at Woodstock at the weekend, when Tom Hanrahan (9) emerged as the winner with 40 points from John Mulcahy (16), who had a similar score. Colin Higgins (18) was third and he also scored 40 points with Mark Barrett (17) in fourth spot with 39 points. Ray Casey (5) won the gross with 37 points.  The category winners were Eoghan O’Loughlin (5) with 35 points, Ger Sadlier (12) with 37 points and Derek Flanagan (16) with 36 points.
In the ladies’ section, Mary Sadlier (13) was the winner with 38 points from Fran Feighery (19) with 35 points, Nancy Burke (26) with 35 points and Jenny McElhinney (36) with 34 points. Anne Marie Russell (10) won the gross with 22 points while the nines were won by Mary Gleeson (24) with 15 points and Kathleen McEnery (36) with 19 points.
In the juniors’ section, Conor Sexton (9) was the winner with 42 points, Jonathan Chan (3) won category 2 with 44 points while Oisín Kelly (36) won category 3 with 41 points. Liam Cahir (16) won the past president’s category with 30 points while Michael Nugent (13) won the senior’s section with 34 points. Michael Lydon won the men’s guests section with 38 points while Vera Madden won the ladies’ guests section with 31 points.
In the Wednesday open singles, Thomas Hehir (12) was the winner with 45 points from Dermot O’Donoghue (6), East Clare with 43 points with Frankie Vaughan (17) in third spot with 42 points.
The seniors had a team-of-three modified scramble and the winning team with 54 points comprised Richard Pyne, Michael Nugent and Udo Umlawski.
There will be a club singles this weekend while the ladies will play for the June medal.

Lahinch

The president’s (Martin Barrett) prize was played for at Lahinch on Friday and Saturday when Willie Moore (12) captured the honours with 41 points. He had three to spare over Billy Casey (16) with Pat Wall (15), also with 38 points, in third spot. Eoin McMahon (4) was next, also with 38 points followed by Pat O’Dwyer (16) with 37 points.
Niall Morrisson won the gross on Friday with 35 points while Eddie Power won this section on Saturday with 36 points.
Frank O’Callaghan (19) won the seniors’ section with 38 points from Cyril O’Dowd (15) on 36 points. John Dillon (8) won the junior category with 27 points while the past president’s section was won by Noel Pyne (1) with 34 points.
Friday’s winner was Pádraig Hayes (10) with 37 points from David Sheedy (6) on 36 points, Bob Loftus (2) on 36 points and Michael Hennessy (7) with 36 points.
Mark O’Donoghue (8) won Saturday’s competition with 37 points from John Gleeson (8) with 36 points, Ray Madden (8) with 35 points and Niall Goulding (1) with 35 points.
In the Bogberry Spring matchplay, Bernard Whelan emerged as the winner, beating Tom Saunders in the final.  Denis Creedon and Adrian Lyons-McMahon were the beaten semi-finalists while Creedon was also the leading qualifier.
The winners of the winter league were Michael and Stephen Hennessy with Don and John Dillon as runners-up.
In Thursday’s open singles, Michael Keane (12) from Charleville was the winner with 39 points from Woodstock’s David Pilkington (18) on a similar score with Mark O’Driscoll (9) from Fermoy in third spot with 37 points.
Maeve O’Reilly (26) captured the O’Hanrahan Trophy for the ladies’ past captain’s prize on the Castle course on Friday with 38 points. Anna Glynn (17) was second on 37 points followed by Yvonne Morrison (16) with 37 points, Eithne Kelly (3) with 37 points and Mary McDonnell (23) with 36 points.
In the O’Mara Cup on Saturday, Liz Barry (28) was the winner with three up from Oonagh Mee (25) on 2 up with Kathy Beaury (25) in third spot with 2 up. Aedin McCarthy Junior (11) won the gross with a level score.
Sunday’s men’s fourball Stableford on the Castle course was won by Willie Moore (10) and Tom Greene Senior (21) with 43 points from Tommy (3) and Paddy Malone (13) on a similar score.
The men’s captain’s (Richard Pyne) prize to the ladies, which was played for on Sunday on the championship course when Aedin McCarthy (11) was the winner with 37 points from Anna Glynn (17) with 36 points, Yvonne Morrisson (16) with 36 points and Geraldine Ryan (17) with 35 points. Eileen Rose Power (scratch0 won the gross with 34 points.
In the silver section Fiona McCarthy (16) won with 34 points from Pamela Morgan (8) with a similar score and Jean Molony (18) with 33 points. In the bronze section, Patricia Ramsey (22 won with 34 points from Karina Doyle (25) on 32 points and Brenda Fitzgerald (21) with 32 points.
Niamh Whelan (12) and Connie Fahy (2) won the front and back nine respectively, each scoring 20 points.

Kilrush

In the open singles  at Kilrush on Sunday, Tom Buckley (16) was the winner with 44 points from Mike Ryan (16) with 43 points and Michael Carigg (23) in third spot on 39 points followed by John Stapleton (17) with 38 points.
In an open singles on Monday, Richard Browne, Roscommon (14) won the open singles with 42 points from John McNeilis (22) who had a similar score. Robert Prunty (12) was third with 41 points. 
In the June open fourball, Eamonn Vickers (10) and Pascal Looney (12) were the winners with 44 points from Kieran Lillis (15) and Shaun Matthews (7) with 42. In third spot with 40 points were Denis Nolan (8) and John Normoyle (11).
In the ladies’ competition last week, Stephanie Roughan (33) was the winner with 43 points from Lucy Blake (32) with 38 points with third spot filled by Margaret Clune (33) with 38 points. The category winners were Ann Brennan (11) with 35 points, Mary O’Sullivan (21) with 37 points and Ursula Lineen (33) with 33 points.
In the Friday mixed, John O’Neill (24) and Mary Keating (36) were the winners with 38 nett from Sean Moran (19) and Geraldine Burke (21) with 40.7 nett. In third spot were Mick Hemmings (18) and Margaret Hehir (22) with 40.7 nett
Open week kicks off this Friday with a mixed competition. The vice captain’s (Declan O’Donovan) prize will be played for on June 25 and timesheet is in operation.

Portumna

The winners of the open fourball at Portumna at the weekend were Enda Finn, Curra West (11) and James Porter (8) with 47 points from Eoin Slattery (11) and Tommy Ryan (14) with 44 points. In third spot with 42 points were Michael Kennedy (10) and Mike Flanagan (8) with 42 points. The gross was won by JP McLoughlin (2) and Sean Cleary (2) with 38 points.
The annual competition to raise funds for the 3Ts charity will be held this weekend. 3Ts (Turn the Tide of Suicide) is a registered charity, founded to raise awareness of the problem of suicide in Ireland and to raise funds to help lower suicide rates through dedicated research, educational support and intervention
The president’s (John Harte) prize will be played over the weekend of June 18 and 19. 

Gort

The winner of the junior scratch cup at Gort at the weekend was Tom Deveney with 78 from Leo Mannion with 80 and Chris Murphy with 80 while Ronan Higgins won the nett with 73.
In the intermediate scratch cup, John Brennan (Loughrea) won with 81 from Philip McNamara on 84 and Tom Finneran with a similar score. Colin Whelan won the nett with 69.
In the minor scratch cup, Gerry Cahill was the winner with 90 from David McAllen on 91 and Don Coen on 95 while Christy Quinn won the nett with 75.
Last week’s 18-hole singles Stableford winner was Anthony Thompson with  40 points from Colman Cooney with 35 points and Paul Mohan with a similar score.
Jason McLynn won the gross with 32 points.
Open week begins this weekend and there will be a selection of competitions throughout the week.
Meanwhile, in the ladies’ section, the winner of last week’s singles was Siobhán O’Connor with 37 points from Ruth Naughton with 35 points and Maura Hanrahan with 33 points.

Dromoland

The winners of the weekend two-person rumble at Dromoland were Ray and Hugh O’Neill with 54 points, followed by Aidan and Martin O’Mahoney on 53 points with third spot filled by Nicholas Duggan and David Casey with 52 points. They were followed by Aidan O’Mahoney and Seamus McEnery with 51 points, Tony Kelly and Brian Arthur with 50 points and Aodhan Wynne and Damian Fahey with 48 points.
Brian Shally won the May monthly medal with 70 nett.
There will be a singles Stableford competition this weekend while the club’s Jimmy Bruen team will be playing in Ennis. The draw for the Dromoland Claret Jug competition takes place this week.

Shannon

In the ladies’ PGA tankard competition, Caroline Fanneran and Liz O’Sullivan both returned 37 points with Caroline just edging out Liz thanks to a better back nine. Deirdre Hughes was third with 36 points, edging out Linda Doherty. The gross was captured by Michelle Pyke with 24 points.
The men’s Wednesday open singles saw Brendan Hughes Junior lead the rest of the field a merry dance when he had three points to spare when returning 43 points. He covered the opening nine in 20 points with a birdie at the eighth being the highlight. He then came home in one under gross with no concession to par, recording eight straight pars and a birdie at the 18th. In second place, for the second week in succession, and returning the same score also for the second week, was junior member Jamie O’Shea on 40 points. Highlight of Jamie’s round was his back nine, which he covered in one under par in which he recorded an eagle at the 18th. Jamie just edged out another junior member, Damien Casey, by virtue of a better back nine. Highlights of Damien’s round were birdies at the first, third and eighth holes. Completing a great night for junior members, Paul O’Neill captured the gross with a level par round. Paul covered the back nine in one under gross, with eight straight pars and a birdie at the 18th.
The bank holiday competition was a four-person scramble, which saw a quartet of Colm O’Flynn, Colm Reidy, Tony Connolly and Pat Madden canter to a runaway victory with 50.6 nett. In second place on 54.1 nett were Jamie O’Shea, Maurice Murphy, Malcolm Simpson and Liam Hogan. Third place went to Michael Hickey, Eugene Logan, Noel Morgan and Kieran Considine with 54.8 nett.
On bank holiday Monday the men’s open singles saw Paul Fitzgerald go round in one under par for 41 points. Paul had one to spare from Tom Walsh. In third place was Tom O’Dea with 39 points while the in-form junior member Jamie O’Shea won the gross with 35 points.
The men’s and ladies’ June medal will be played for this weekend.

Kilkee

In the Members Cup at Kilkee, the winner was  Lena O’Connor (34) with 41 points from Mary O’Mahony (17) on 37 points with  Bessie Lawlor (25) in third spot, also with 37 points. The gross was won by Gráinne Forde (20) with 21 points.
The Lancome Ladies Open Day in aid of Breast Cancer Research will take place on June 15.
In a team-of-four competition in aid of the defibrillator fund, the winners were Michael Reidy (15), Michael Hoare (18), Paul Ruschitzko (16) and Michael Ahern (13) on 97 points from Sean Neylon (10) Noel Roche (12) James McNamara (15) and Leonard. Mullane (12) with 93 points.

Spanish Point

Last Saturday, Spanish Point hosted the first running of past captains, lady captains and presidents’ day and the attendance of over 50 who held those positions over the years made for a great occasion. Six decades of former officers were there and they included Dot Bolster, Dr Michael O’Connor and James Meade, all of whom held office in the 1960s.
In the senior’s open day last week, the winner was Patrick O’Boyle (18) with 36 points. Thursday’s open winner was  Eoghan O’Loughlin (4) with 35 points from Thomas Hehir (10)  with 34 points.
In Friday’s nine-hole team open scramble, the winners were  Gerry O’Loughlin (18), Geraldine Reddan (25) and Roger Emmett (14) with two under gross.
In the Jim Finnerty Memorial, the winner was John J Skerritt (12) with 62 nett from Ned Rushe (20) with 64 nett,  Joseph O’Rourke (20) with  65 nett, Liam Rushe (24)  with 66 nett, Niall McMahon (18) with  66nett, Michael Hehir (11) with 66 nett and Donal Burke (19) with  67 nett.
The Jimmy Bruen team, managed by Brendan Reddan, will be in action in Ennis this Saturday while the JB Carr team will take on Lahinch on Monday on the championship course.

East Clare

Liam Husband (10) was the winner of the men’s open singles at East Clare with 43 points from James Mulqueen (12) with 40 points and Michael Minihan (17) with 38 points.
In the open team-of-three competition, the winners with 66 points were Sean Walsh, Seamus O’Dwyer and Michael O’Halloran. They had three to spare over Evelyn Skehan, Deirdre Cooney and Mary Rogest.
The winners of the open mixed competition were Enda Donnellan and Kathleen O’Brien with 40 points from Jim Greene and Margaret McNamara on 39 points, with third spot filled by Derek Kenny and Mary Beatty on 38 points. Aoife and Pat O’Mahony won the front nine with Kevin Hayes and Helen Williams winning the back nine.
The winners of Friday’s scramble were John Kelly, Brendan Foley and Margaret Lynch from John Doyle, Ben Kilkenny and Mary Joe Minogue.
There will be a men’s 18-hole singles this weekend while the ladies will have a golfer-of-the year competition.
