Corofin crowned Munster champions

Corofin 2-12 Cappoquin 1-4

COROFIN captured their first Munster Camogie Championship trophy in sunny Cashel last Saturday when they overcame the challenge of Cappoquin from Waterford in the provincial junior final.
The victory puts them through to the All-Ireland semi-final against the Ulster champions on November 14.
In Saturday’s final, Corofin had the first attack but it ended in a wide in the second minute. The Waterford representatives took the lead through a Jessica Gavin Johnson point before Corofin levelled with a Claire Commane free in the seventh minute.
Claire Commane also had the side’s next score when she pointed after taking a pass from Niamh O’Dea but Cappoquin levelled soon after through Jenny McCarthy.
Elaine McCarthy and Claire Commane exchanged points as Corofin looked to be taking a grip on the game but then lady luck smiled on Cappoquin. A high, speculative shot into the Corofin goalmouth was taken down by Corofin goalie Carmel Tierney but she was dispossessed and the sliothar ended up in the net.
Corofin regrouped and Claire Commane scored the last point of the first half to leave the half-time score at 1-3 to 0-4 in the Waterford representatives’ favour.
Corofin started strongly in the second half and soon took the lead. Edel Keating made a fabulous catch from a Cappoquin puck-out and laid off the ball to Commane whose shot on goal was saved but Caitriona McMahon finished the rebound to the net.
Corofin took the game to Cappoquin and Linda McMahon scored a point, quickly followed by a Niamh O’Dea point. Two points followed from Claire Commane and the Clare side were five points clear.
The new Munster junior champions were playing well and 13 minutes into the second half, the Cappoquin goalie, Tracy Kiely fumbled the ball and Aislinn Kelleher finished to the net to stretch the North Clare side’s lead.
Cappoquin tried to get back into the game and were awarded a free but failed to score.
Three points in succession, two from Claire Commane and one from Aislinn Kelleher, put Corofin into a commanding lead. Cappoquin were awarded a free, which they pointed but Kelleher scored the last point of the game to leave Corofin comfortable winners.
Referee Eamonn Brown presented the player-of-the-match trophy to Claire Commane and he also presented the Munster Championship Trophy to Corofin Captain Aislinn Kelleher.
