Concern over Fergus Park walkway plan

PLANS by the Office of Public Works to create a new walkway at the back of the estate has raised concerns among Fergus Park residents.

The OPW has made amendments to the original Fergus Lower Certified Drainage Scheme that include changing original plans for a timber fence at the walkway to be replaced with a handrail.
Councillor Johnny Flynn told this week’s meeting of Ennis Town Council that there is “significant concern” among residents in Fergus Park about the new plans.
The OPW wrote to Ennis Town Council informing them that it has become necessary to amend the original scope of the scheme.
According to Brendan McDermott, Flood Project Management Services with the OPW, “This work is due to commence shortly and these amendments will have an impact on your property.”
Plans for the Fergus Park area to Knox bridge include providing reinforced concrete flood walls with natural limestone cladding on visible faces. Works also include the reinstatement of surrounding ground and that all existing surface water outfalls into the river will be fitted with a tideflex valve.
Proposals for the area outlined in 2005 included a new footpath and timer fence to be installed approximately 1.25 metres above garden levels. However, the amended plans include the provision of a new footpath and hand railing.
“A lot of the residents don’t want the walkway and there is a big difference from having a fence to having a just a handrail separating them,” commented Councillor Flynn.
