Colin named sexiest farmer

EAST Clare’s sexiest farmer 2012 is a Bodyke man. Colin Molloy from Dromod scooped the title from nine other eager contestants in the East Clare Sexiest Farmer Competition held in Tulla recently.

The competition was so fierce it is estimated that The National Children’s Hospital in Tallaght will benefit from between €14,000-€15,000 as a result.

The Powerhouse in Tulla is where the 10 fine specimens, each representing his own parish, were showcased to a packed audience.

The other participating sexy farmers included Henry Hayes, Feakle; Neil O’Brien, O’Callaghan’s Mills; John Hogan, Tulla; John Minogue, Whitegate; Damien Murphy, Crusheen; Cathal Nash, Scariff; Niall Bugler, Killanena; Willie O’Brien, Tulla and Michael Daffy, Clooney.

Speaking about his win, Colin said, “When I won it was an absolute shock to tell you the truth and I was lucky enough to go on second and I thought lovely job – done”.

The competition was initiated by Tulla farmer, Matthew Corry and each of the participants ran his own fundraising initiatives in the run-up to the big night on December 28. The decision was made by Ciara O’Grady, director of fundraising and events at The National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght and her colleague, Evelyn McMahon. The two interviewed each of the candidates and assessed them all on their sex appeal and personality.

In addition to the main event, Peadar Greene organised an 8km family fun run as a curtain raiser.
Colin said he got involved because “it was such a worthy cause” and said he was delighted he did.

“Without a doubt, it was one of the most enjoyable nights and I’m not just saying that. There was such a crowd there and such an atmosphere there. It was something different and was hugely enjoyable and I said, ‘why not get involved’,” he said.

“Matthew deserves a huge amount of credit on this. I’m in awe of him. It wasn’t easy. He just set a target and to get €15,000 is just marvellous. He really went above and beyond.

“The two girls were fantastic. I think they made up a heap of questions for every lad and I don’t know what did it but I got away with it anyway. It would have been based on my personality, let me tell you because it wasn’t my farming skills, so I presume it was my personality,” the suckler farmer added.

Speaking about the night, Matthew said, “It went very well. We had a fundraiser on the night and together with the 8km run, we are looking at somewhere between €14,000 and €15,000 raised for the hospital.

“People responded unbelievably and the lads pulled out all the stops. The response was incredible. It worked out very well and we might knock another two years out of it. You’re nervous about how it will go but really we had a fabulous crowd on the night and all the rest of the pubs in Tulla gained out of it also.

“There was a great spin-off. The crowd on the night was unbelievable – you had teenagers up to adults so there was a great mix and they all enjoyed it. We’ll be looking at bringing out a DVD on it now.”

Matthew went on to pay tribute to everyone who has helped with the fundraising appeals year-in, year-out, particularly Peadar Greene.
