Close competition for huge field at Ennis Seniors’ outing

Ennis Seniors held a team-of-four competition last week, when 99 golfers played. The winners, on 81 points, were Michael Cummins, Don Ryan, Pat Cusack and Paddy Cahill. A point behind in second place were Ned Ryan, Greg Fogarty, Tim Kelly and Seamus Frehill. In third place were Michael Torpey, Paschal Russell, Ollie Kenneally and Val Bredin, also with 80 points, followed by Frankie White, John Joe Keane, Sean O’Gorman and John White on 79, Tom Pilkington, Ferdie O’Donoghue, John McEntee and Pat McInerney on 78, with sixth spot filled by Pádraig Ryan, Willie Delaney, Charlie McEnery and John Normoyle on 78.

The seniors annual general meeting will be held this Thursday.

The weekend turkey fourball winners were Jason Woods and Johnnie Finn from Andrew McCloin and Greg Fogarty, with third spot filled by Willie Delaney and Sean O’Gorman. All three pairings had 48 points. They were followed by Sam Doyle and Colin Higgins with 47 points, Noel O’Connor and John Blessington, also with 47 points, with sixth spot filled by Pat McMahon and Martin Cassidy with 46 points.

Spanish Point

Due to the very heavy rain, the seniors’ open did not take place last week, which is the first time since summer ended that a competition was cancelled. However, the Friday open went ahead and the winner was Anthony Garrihy (14) with 35 points.

A big entry played in the turkey singles last weekend, which was an increase of nearly 25% on the previous weekend’s team event and with a great score of 41 points, Eamonn Murphy (11) was the winner from Martin Glenny (15) with 39 points, Brendan Sexton (15) with 38 points and Eoghan O’Loughlin (3) on 38 points.

The competition this weekend will be a scotch foursomes and members are reminded the AGM of the Parent Club Committee takes place on Saturday, December 1 in the clubhouse.

Portumna

THE winners of the weekend’s singles competition at Portumna were Albert Kelly (8) with 33 points (category 0-10), Dean Cox (11) with 31 points (category 11-14), Stephen Madden (15) with 33 points, (category 15-18), PJ Hogan (26) with 32 points (category 19 and over) and Martin Kennedy (9) with 31 points (seniors).

In the men’s matchplay, the singles winner was Mike Kiely from Pádraig Purcell. The winners of the matchplay foursomes were Mike McGivern and Ger Brehony, who beat Joe Slattery and Pat Quinlan.

The Final Fling will be on Sunday, December 9 and this will include the men’s Christmas hampers and the presentation of prizes to the golfer of the year winner and matchplay winners.

The AGM of the men’s section will be held in the clubhouse next Monday at 8pm. The ladies’ AGM will take place this Sunday in the committee room, while the annual meeting of the parent committee will take place on Tuesday, December 4 in the clubhouse at 8pm.

The club will hold a Texas hold ’em poker classic on Friday, December 7 at 8pm.

Woodstock

The winners in the weekend hamper competition at Woodstock were Frank McEnery (14) with 45 points in category A (0-14 handicap) and Gerry O’Malley (17) with 46 points in category B (handicap 15 and over).

The final hamper competition of the year will take place this weekend.

Gort

In the men’s 18-hole singles Stableford hampers competition at Gort at the weekend, the winner was Tony Kenny (9) with 44 points from Rory Gantley (18) on 40 points, Derek Kinsella (18) on 40 points and Shane Keane (15) on 37 points. Eamonn Morrissey (5) won the gross with 31 points.

There will be an 18-hole singles Stableford competition this weekend.

Last week’s ladies singles competition over 13 holes was won by Josie Collins (17) with 29 points from Phil Mulkerrins (26) with a similar score. There will be another ladies’ Christmas mini hampers competition over 13 holes this week.

Lahinch

Walter O’Brien (12) won Saturday’s men’s singles stroke monthly medal competition over 17 holes at Lahinch with 67 nett. He won by a stroke from Noel Gallivan (16), with Gerry Gough (12) a further stroke back in third spot.

On Sunday, the men’s singles Stableford competition on the Castle Course was won by John O’Gorman (20) with 37 points, while the men’s foursomes Stableford competition on the Championship Course was won by John Shaw (2) and Tom Holly (20) with 30 points.

In the mixed foursomes hampers competition on the Championship Course on Sunday, the winners were Brendan O’Doherty (7) and Jenny Cagney (15) with 34 points from Jimmy (12) and Georgina Condon (17) with 30 points.

In the men’s open singles on Thursday, Martin Barry (16) was the winner with 37 points from Jim O’Connor (12) with a similar score.

Last week’s ladies singles Stableford competition was won by Emily Chambers (12) with 33 points from Georgina Condon (17) with 32 points.

Dromoland

The men’s weekly turkey competition at Dromoland was won by Nicky Duggan with 42 points from Alan Neville on 41 and David Casey on 38. Joe Moran, with 37 points, won the category for over 18 handicappers while the junior winner was Gordon O’Neill with 32 points.

The men’s competition this week will again be for turkeys.

In the ladies’ weekly turkey competition, the winner was Linda Kochar from Maeve McMahon with Anne O’Toole winning the junior section.

Shannon

The winners of the men’s 15-hole fourball competition at Shannon last weekend were John Pearse and John Morrissey with 41 points. The had one to spare over Eamonn Cregan and Tim Crowe, with third spot filled by Michael O’Connor and Andrew Pearse on 39 points.

Clarecastle

Clarecastle Golf Society will hold its Christmas hamper outing at Galway Bay Golf Club this Saturday. The first tee has been reserved from 9.30am. Members and Guests intending to play should text their preferred tee time to 086 3246015.

Kilrush

In the seniors outing at Kilrush last Wednesday, the winners were TJ Lyons, Tom Cleary and Paddy Carmody from John Robinson, Tom Clarke and Tom McGrath, with third spot filled by D Eastman, Noel Cooney and Barry Taylor.

The winter league concluded last weekend, with Tom Cleary’s team emerging as the winners with 331 points from Anthony Burke’s team on 327 points, with Pat Shannon’s team in third spot on 319 points.

The weekly individual winners were Pat Shannon (Cappa) with 31 points, Anthony Burke with 31 points, Jimmy McSwiggan with 31 points and Margaret Clune with 33 points.

A weekly singles competition takes place from Sunday to Saturday inclusive and re-entry is allowed.

Doonbeg Golfing Society

THE Doonbeg Golfing Society captain’s prize outing was held at Doonbeg Golf Club and there was a big attendance.

In first place in the men’s section was Declan Conway, second was Derek Garvey and third Brian Shanahan. The longest drive was Maurice Mangan and nearest to the pin was Seanie Moloney.

The prize for the front nine went to Pádraig Conway, f Nigel Dillon won the back nineprize and the guest prize went to Michael Waters.

In the ladies’ section, first was Elizabeth Williams, second was Geraldine Burke and third Helen Williams. Nearest the pin was Aoife O’Malley, the longest drive was Maureen Kinnerk and the guest prize went to Marie Ruane.

Pitch and putt

Gerry Kierce was the winner of the stroke play competition at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday. Paddy Sheedy was in second place and Ger Hanrahan won the gross prize.
