Clare Schoolboys and girls’ awards this weekend


THE Clare Schoolboys/girls’ league will host its second annual awards evening this Saturday at the Auburn Lodge Hotel. Last year, Ray Houghton was the special guest and the evening proved to be an outstanding success.

Former Irish international Mick Martin, capped 52 times for Ireland, will be the special guest on this occasion and he will be accompanied by Martin O’Hanlon, general secretary of the SFAI and John Delaney, the chief executive of the FAI. Martin played for Bohemians before going on to play with Manchester United and Newcastle.
All of the league-winning teams together with cup winners and runners-up will attend with their cups and players are asked to be in their team jerseys.
Between 4 and 6pm, the U-11 league winners, Lifford (Division 1), Newmarket Celtic (Division 2), St Pat’s (Division 3) and Fern Celtic (Division 4) will attend as will the U-12 winners, Moneypoint (Division 1), Connolly Celtic (Division 2) and the U-14 league winners, Avenue (Division 1) and Ennis Town (Division 2). The U-12 Cup winners, Moneypoint, and runners-up Avenue along with the U-14 Cup winners Avenue and runners-up, Moneypoint will also attend at this time as will the U-11 Cup winners, Avenue and runners-up, St Pat’s. Girls’ teams from Newmarket and Monutshannon will also be present
Later, between 7 and 9pm, the U-13 league winners Avenue (Division 1) and Burren Utd (Division 2) together with the U-13 Cup winners, Avenue and runners-up Fern Celtic will attend as will the U-15 league winners, Ennis Town (Division 1) and Lifford (Division 2) and the U-15 Cup winners, Avenue and runners-up, Newmarket Celtic. The U-16 Division 1 winners ,Newmarket Celtic, and Division 2 winners, St Pat’s, along with the Cup winners, Avenue and runners-up Newmarket Celtic, will also attend at this time.
“We held an awards night for the first time last year and it was a great success and we are looking forward to another big turnout this time,” commented Schoolboys league chairman, Frankie Gormley, this week.
